CEDAR CITY – Downtown Cedar City will play host to the third annual Soap Box Challenge on Saturday at 4 p.m. when racers enjoy a gravity-fed experience as they cruise through downtown Main Street.
“Three years ago we had this vision to create something for young people to pursue another avenue of competition,” Andy Funderburke, race organizer and co-founder said.
The event features home-built categories for anyone and everyone, and a Super Stock Sanction category for competitors ages 10-17.
The winner of the sanctioned category will qualify to compete in Akron, Ohio, at the First Energy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship in July.
In regards to the home-built categories, Byron Linford, Cedar City events coordinator, said: “It’s not cost prohibitive, about anybody can do it, anybody can round up stuff around their backyard and build a car.”
The event is not just for racers but also for people in the community to come out and spectate.
“Our interest is to get families out to enjoy the race and to support those young people who are racing,” Funderburke said.
All soapbox derby cars have to pass a tech inspection before the race begins. A registration form can be accessed online and day-of registration will be available. For more details regarding race info, registration forms, rules and regulations visit the Cedar City website.
