ST. GEORGE – An AirMed helicopter landed in Bluff Street Park in St. George earlier this afternoon preparatory to participating in this weekend’s Utah Association of Emergency Medical Technicians Conference.

AirMed flew a helicopter from University of Utah, located in Salt Lake City, and landed in Bluff Street Park in order for EMTs to see the latest equipment onboard the copter.

“When they bring it here, it affords us the opportunity to see the equipment they have in the helicopter and just to see the new technology that’s available,” said Tom Hodgson, president of the Utah Association of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Seeing the helicopter up close allows EMTs to familiarize themselves with the aircraft and prepare themselves in case they ever have to use it for emergency transport, Hodgson said.

“They can show the (Emergency Medical Services) people the use of their new chopper and let them take a look at that,” said Barbara Simpson, treasurer for the Utah Association of Emergency Medical Technicians.

A field drill will take place on Friday, allowing EMTs to practice what they have learned. The simulated incident changes every year; this year’s drill is a theater fire.

The conference is an annual hands-on learning experience that will continue through Saturday.
