SANTA CLARA — Harmons Grocery owns property in Santa Clara, a neighboring city to St. George, and has told the Santa Clara City Council in a conference call that the Utah-based chain of grocery stores plans to begin construction of a new store there about a year from now. The Harmons property is located on the northeast corner of the Rachel Drive, Pioneer Parkway intersection.

Though not an official announcement, Harmons officials told the City of Santa Clara they anticipate completing construction of the new store sometime in late spring 2015, with a public opening date slated for summer 2015, Santa Clara City Manager Edward Dickie said. However, he added, this schedule could always change.

Although Harmons officials have plans to build a new store, they aren’t officially announcing them until after a remodeling project is completed at the existing Harmons location on River Road in St. George, Dickie said. The remodel is the company’s current focus in the St. George area and should begin within the next month, with an anticipated completion date of October 2014.

“Once we get that up and going then we’ll look at that other property that we own,” Harmons public relations spokesperson Tara Haynie said.

Harmons officials also told Santa Clara City that plans for a new store could change depending on factors like the economy, Dickie said.

Although not openly announcing the construction of a new store, Haynie said Harmons does own property in the Santa Clara area and plans to build a second store.

“Once we actually finalize the plans for that store and then have a construction timeline, then we will make an announcement,” Haynie said.

Several years ago, Harmons’ plans to build in Santa Clara did change. Harmons was originally going to commence construction when the Santa Clara property was initially purchased, Dickie said, around 2008 or 2009. But once the economy slowed down, they put it off.

“We understand that things can change,” he said, :but we feel optimistic it will happen this year.”

The Santa Clara City Council anticipates other commercial development will happen around the intersection once Harmons is built, Dickie said. A commercial development would benefit the residents of Santa Clara and would be huge for the city.

“Our residents will be able to shop within their own city limits for grocery needs, and the city will receive additional sales tax revenue that will help our general fund,” he said.

Woo hoo, can’t come soon enough for us. I love Harmons, but the one on River Road is too far away!

The schedule stated in this article is a little confusing, “…plans to begin construction of a new store there about a year from now. …with a public opening date slated for summer 2015… hmmm. How can you “begin” and “open” at the same time? No matter, we need it! Hopefully, it won’t be too expensive to shop there – the store on River Road is too far away. The sooner they start construction, the better for everyone of Santa Clara! Come onnnnnn, Harmon’s!
