LAVERKIN – The LaVerkin City Soap Box Derby was held on the steep slope of Center Street early Saturday. The spectacle is normally held during the day events of the city’s Winterfest celebration in December, but it was rescheduled this past year due to a severe winter storm.

We had such a great response last year we decided to add an adult division this year,” said Ashley Averett, event chairperson and a LaVerkin City employee.

The event included three racing divisions, with prizes awarded for first and second place in each. Eleven people entered the competition.

The race was sponsored by Mad Nutz and Southern Mountain 4×4. With family, friends, and spectators watching, the participants in the Pro Category, Custom Category and the newly established Adult Category began racing in their respective heats. City Manager Kyle Gubler officially began the race at 10:30 a.m.

As the cars sped their way down the hill, some individuals departing from the Ironman 70.3 event in neighboring Hurricane stopped to see what was happening.

“We were headed home when we saw the cars and the crowd and decided to see what was going on,” said St. George resident Andrew Dahlquist.

In the end, six individuals walked away with the first and second place trophies. The awards were handed out by members of the LaVerkin City royalty.

We liked this so much I am signing my sons up for the next one,” said Dahlquist after the race concluded.

The next LaVerkin Soap Box Derby is scheduled for Dec. 6, 2014.
