Garrett Taylor attempted to escape custody at Purgatory Correctional Facility after he was initially arrested for driving under the influence and driving with a revoked driver's license.

LAVERKIN – A St. George man was arrested on two separate occasions Saturday, including escaping arrest.

Garrett Taylor, 28, was initially arrested on three charges, including driving under the influence and driving with a revoked driver’s license.

However, when LaVerkin City Police Officers Marshall Bull and Travis Romney transported Taylor to Purgatory Correctional Facility, Taylor allegedly attempted to escape.

According to a probable cause statement filed by the LaVerkin City Police Department, at about 4:03 p.m., Taylor broke away from the officers’ vehicle in Purgatory’s sally port and sprinted underneath the closing sally port door.

Romney chased close behind Taylor under the door and through the parking lot, according to the probable cause statement, yelling at him to stop. Romney closed the distance between he and Taylor and knocked him to the ground.

Romney held him down until Bull and correctional officers arrived to help, the statement said. Taylor continued to resist arrest “by becoming dead weight and having to be dragged into the correctional facility.”

Taylor was then charged with escaping from official custody, a third-degree felony, and failing to stop at the command of law enforcement, a class-A misdemeanor.

Taylor’s initial arrest took place just moments before transportation to the correctional facility.

Bull responded to a call from dispatch that a silver Ford Focus was driving erratically northbound across Laverkin Bridge. Bull found the vehicle and pulled over Taylor.

According to a separate probable cause statement filed by the LaVerkin City Police Department, Bull asked Taylor if he had been drinking, and Taylor said he had. After identifying Taylor, that’s when the officers discovered that Taylor was driving with a revoked driver’s license.

Taylor made multiple attempts to exit the patrol vehicle while in custody, according to the probable cause statement filed in conjunction with the first arrest.

Taylor was charged with a DUI, a third-degree felony, driving with a revoked driver’s license, a class-B misdemeanor, and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle on the highway, a class-C misdemeanor.

Total bail for the combined arrests at booking is listed at $12,793.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
