Man flees from police, arrested short time later

ST. GEORGE — Police apprehended a St. George man who tried to flee custody when multiple warrants for his arrest were discovered.

Omar Romero, 23, of St. George, tried to escape custody on a traffic stop while driving on I-15 Friday. Police officers pulled  Romero over for speeding and that’s when they discovered multiple warrants for Romero’s arrest, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said.

Romero fled on foot across I-15 when officers attempted to take him into custody, Despain said. He weaved through traffic on the interstate, but no vehicle accidents occurred during the escape. Police officers discovered Romero hiding in Washington City around 6:30 p.m., which was a short time after the initial traffic stop, and arrested him then.

Romero was charged with escaping custody, a third-degree felony, failing to stop for an officer, a class A misdemeanor, and interference with an arrest, a class B misdemeanor. According to booking information, six warrants had been issued for various class-B and class-C misdemeanors.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
