BRISBANE, Calif. – The nationally-ranked Dixie State softball team swept the Academy of Art University Saturday to move to 42-8 overall and in a first-place tie with California Baptist at 25-5 atop the PacWest Conference.
After falling behind early against AAU in the first game, the Red Storm scored 11 runs in the top of the sixth to mercy-rule the Urban Knights 20-8. Freshman Brooklyn Beardshear got the win in relief, moving to 4-0 on the season. Courtney Sherwin, Sheila Geltner and Marla Reiter all hit homers in the game with Reiter’s being a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the sixth.
In the second game, Dixie State jumped out early, scoring eight runs in the first two innings to coast to an 11-5 victory. Mallory Paulson matched Reiter’s grand slam with one of her own in the first inning. She followed that up with a second home run in the second inning. Courtney Hine also homered in the second.
Red Storm pitcher Michelle Duncan went the distance moving to 14-1 on the year scattering seven hits and allowing five runs.
The Red Storm will finish their season tomorrow, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge to take on Dominican University in San Rafael. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. Pacific Time.
