UTAH – The National Weather Service has issued a “Winter Weather Advisory” for snow for Wasatch and Western Uinta Mountains, the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs, the central and southern mountains of Utah.

This advisory is in effect from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday.

Affected areas – Interstate 80, the western Uinta Mountains, Wasatch Plateau-Blook Cliffs, central and southern mountains, including the cities of Woodruff, Randolph, Alta, Brighton, Mirror Lake Highway, Scofield, Cove Fort Koosharem, Fish Lake, Loa, Panguitch and Bryce Canyon.

Snow accumulations and levels –  New snowfall of 6-12 inches is expected mainly above about 7,000 feet. Greater amounts are possible at the higher elevations. Snow levels will start around 9,000 feet then fall to around 6,000 feet by midday.

Timing – Rain and snow at the high elevations will begin across the north Friday evening then increase and change to snow late Friday night through midday Saturday. Rain and snow will start in the south after midnight then change to snow and become heavy late Friday through Saturday morning.  Snow will turn showery in all areas Saturday afternoon then taper off Saturday evening.

Winds – Strong gusty southerly winds will continue tonight then switch to northwest and diminish by midday Saturday.

Impacts – Winter driving conditions are expected across the higher elevation routes Friday night. Winter driving conditions will impact most mountain passes starting late Friday night through the day Saturday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions

A winter weather advisory means that snow accumulations will, primarily, cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow-covered roads. Use caution while driving.
