UPDATED: Bulldog Fire threatens structures, homes; contained

UPDATE 10:15 p.m.  The Bulldog Fire has been contained and mop-up is ongoing from 7 p.m.

Cause of the fire was confirmed as human-caused through the burning of debris. The fire size was confirmed at 45 acres, and is 100 percent contained.

Fire Management Officer Mike Melton issued the following reminder for cautions 

The public is reminded that Utah is in its third year of drought. Conditions are drier than they appear and drier than they normally are this time of year. One careless act can have extreme consequences. Please check with your local fire officials on requirements to burn.

CEDAR CITY — A wildfire burning 1 mile north of Cedar City in the area of Bulldog Road, named the “Bulldog Fire,” reached up to 20-30 acres by around 4 p.m. Friday, threatening an estimated 30 structures including some homes.

The fire is believed to have been human caused and investigation is ongoing.

According to a release issued by Mike Melton, Fire Management Officer with the Division of Forestry, the fire was 50 percent contained late Friday afternoon, fast moving and driven by winds of 25-30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. It is running through and fueled by grass and brush, with short-range spotting in some areas.

There are approximately 12 engines, three water tender and six supervisors from local, state and federal agencies involved in fighting this fire.

Voluntary evacuations of a few homes on Bulldog Road have been made.  There have been no reported injuries.

Although there are no official road closures in place, the public is asked to avoid Bulldog Road at Mid Valley at this time.

    That’s toooo close to my son. He’s in that general area. Hope they got it completely out.
