ST. GEORGE — Snow Canyon avenged one of its two region losses by pounding 9 runs and 12 hits Tuesday afternoon in an easy win over Dixie at Warrior Field.

Ironically, the Lady Warriors had one fewer hit this time around than they did in a 3-2 loss to Dixie a month ago.

softb“We talked about it a lot,” said Dixie coach Brandyn Sargent. “We had (a lot ) of errors in that game, too. But we left so many runners on base. Today we just went out there and pounded it gap to gap like we’re supposed to.”

It looked like another upset in the making in the top of the first inning as Dixie actually grabbed the lead in this game. Hannah Nyberg led off with a single and scored on a double by Stacia Gelter in the top of the first.

But that was just about the only highlight for Dixie as SC pitcher Heather Prestwich was in control the rest of the way, allowing the Flyers just one more hit after that.

“I feel more confident than I ever have this year and  l just love pitching,” Prestwich said. “I love the pressure. I don’t know why. It just takes a special person to do it. I love it.”

Meanwhile, Snow Canyon’s bats wasted no time in getting things turned around. The Warriors tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the first when Sonja Hardy scored on a Dixie error. Moments later, Ashleigh Miller ripped a two-run single to make it 3-1 with the game still in the first inning.

Shelby Hutchings made it 4-1 in the second inning and the Warriors were still batting with the bases loaded in the inning when Miller came up again. She delivered again, knocking a clean single to center to bring home two more runs and make it 6-1.

Kenzie Reynolds knocked in two more runs in the third and Madda Mooring hit a solo home run in the fifth to round out the scoring.

Prestwich finished with an impressive pitching line, allowing three hits and just the one run, while striking out five. SC also did not commit an error.

The Warriors improve to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in region with a visit to Cedar scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Dixie, 8-10 and 5-4, is still positioned in fourth place and will likely get into the playoffs. The Lady Flyers play at Canyon View Thursday.

Josie Platt got the win in the circle as Canyon View crushed the Thunder and improved to 14-4 overall and 8-2 in region.

The Falcons kept pace with Snow Canyon with the win and both teams stayed a half-game ahead of Cedar.

Platt has the best numbers in region pay as a pitcher, allowing just 30 total runs in 10 games. CV plays Dixie Thursday and then finishes region play next Tuesday against Hurricane.

The Thunder, which fell to 8-10 and 3-6, need to win their last three games and hope Dixie loses at least two of its last three to have a chance at a playoff spot. DH is at Hurricane Friday.

Cedar 5, Pine View 3

The Lady Reds stayed within striking distance of the Warriors and Falcons with the key home win behind the pitching of Marinn Whitney.

Cedar, 10-9 and 7-2, is a half-game behind the other two league-leaders. The Reds have three games remaining, including Thursday’s home match-up with Snow Canyon.
