Family rescued in Iron County on road between Kolob, Upper Basin

IRON COUNTY – A family of five got stuck while traveling between Kolob and the Upper Basin in Iron County Sunday night.

At about 11 p.m. Sunday, a call came in from a family — parents and three children — which had its vehicle stuck in the snow. Iron County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue responded to the call and was able to help the family down off the mountain by 1:30 a.m. Monday. Search and Rescue did not have the names of the family members.

These folks were smart,” Search and Rescue Commander Buck Neagle said. “They came as far as they could and got stuck and waited for us.”

Search and rescue found the family members waiting near their vehicle and in good spirits along the road on Cedar Mountain, Neagle said.

“Three of my guys drove over to them from base camp and were able to get them and warm them up,” Neagle said. “(The family members) were fine. They did what they were supposed to.”

This was the third consecutive weekend where someone has gotten stuck along the road from Kolob to the Upper Basin, Neagle said. Anyone who chooses to take that road should take caution, he said, because the snow has not yet melted.

“Wait until the snow is cleared before you pass through that road,” he said. “It seems like you could get anywhere, but you can’t.”

Those who own cabins in the area have no problem navigating the road and know where to go, Neagle said. The people who are getting stuck are passers-by, who aren’t familiar with the area.

Neagle said he was pleased with how smoothly the search went, and he credited everyone with Search and Rescue for putting in hard work.

“There’s a lot of dedication in the group,” he said. “Dispatch did an excellent job of keeping us aware of what was going on.”
