HURRICANE — The running of the finals for the 45th Dixie Downs Races, presented by the St. George Lions Club, was held on Saturday at the Washington County Regional Park in Hurricane. Four horse races were scheduled along with an unofficial schooling race for thoroughbreds.

The main event was the 2014 Dixie Downs Quarter Horse Futurity. The purse for the futurity totaled over $22,000 with the winner, Hiko Hellion, ridden by Osvaldo Macias, taking home $10,284.75.

Great weather with mild temperatures and a light breeze brought out a crowd to watch the racehorses compete. Volunteers from the St. George Lions Club worked on track preparation and served cold drinks, hot dogs and hamburgers.

“It is a great way to spend an afternoon,” one of the volunteers said. “Most of the horses are trained and stabled right here at the track.”

The trials and qualifying races  for the competitions of the day were held on April 5, at the Dixie Downs Race Track.

From 1968 to 1995, the Dixie Downs Race Track, located just off of Dixie Downs, held the annual Southern Utah horse race. In 1980 the St. George Lions Club took over the event with hundreds of volunteers to update and manage the facility. In 1996 the event moved to Hurricane.

Today, the St. George Lions Club boasts 110 members, making it the largest Lions Club in Utah. The Lions and Lady Lions sponsor the Dixie Roundup Rodeo, Daily Parades, the Rodeo Queen and Princess Contest and will be sponsoring the drag races next weekend at the site of the old St. George Airport.
