Soccer roundup: Green is golden for Flyers in 2nd OT vs. Pine View

ST. GEORGE –With the two best defenses in the region dominating the pitch, you had to figure it was going to take something special to get this one done. Alex Green used his head and that was pretty special.

soccerGreen headed in the game-winner with about two minutes left in the second overtime to push the Dixie Flyers to a 1-0 victory over Pine View at Walt Brooks Stadium Tuesday night, drawing Dixie into a dead-even tie with the Panthers for first place in Region 9.

Green, notching his sixth goal of the season and has 26th career-goal as a high school competitor, ended the game with his speed and his noggin, slipping behind the defense and poking in a cross from Luis Rabago. The goal ended a game in which the two teams battled up and down the field with few decent shots on goal, and most of those whisked away easily by sharp keepers Hayden Mathews of Dixie and Justin Jones of Pine View. Mathews got the shutout and Jones came about as close as you can get without recording one. It is the fourth whitewash of the year for Mathews. Jones just missed his fourth.

The win gives Dixie a 5-2-1 region record, good enough for 16 points and an identical tie with PV. In fact, the two teams are also 8-2-2 overall as well. Should they end tied, Dixie will have the tiebreaker as the two teams tied in their previous meeting at Pine View.

The Flyers play at Desert Hills Friday and have four game remaining, including a trip to third-place Snow Canyon in two weeks.

The Panthers are at Hurricane Friday and then visit Snow Canyon next Tuesday before closing out the season with two home matches.

Desert Hills 3, Snow Canyon 1

The Thunder got a huge win Tuesday night, drawing closer to a playoff spot with the home win. Desert Hills raced out to a 3-0 lead with two goals from Tanner Browning and a score from Taylor Banualos, then held on in the second half for the win.

DH, last year’s region champ, still sits three points behind Cedar and four behind Snow Canyon in the race for a playoff spot, but a loss would have pretty much eliminated the Thunder from the playoffs. Desert Hills, 4-7-1 overall and 3-5-0 in region, hosts Dixie Friday and then has a huge match at Cedar next Wednesday with major playoff implications.

The Warriors, who got a goal from Eli Wade, are 5-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in region. Their 13 points are three back of league leaders PV and Dixie. SC hosts Canyon View Friday.

Cedar 1, Hurricane 0

Brock Shipp blasted the only goal of the game in overtime as Cedar grabbed third place with the win at Hurricane.

The Redmen leapfrogged Snow Canyon in the standings with the win, earning three points for the win. Kaeland Osborne got the shutout in goal for CHS, which is 7-4-0 overall and 4-3-0 in region. The Reds next play at Canyon View next Tuesday.

Hurricane, 5-5-1 and 2-5-0, hosts Pine View Friday.

This is shaping up to be one of the most interesting region 9 boys soccer seasons Ive been around to watch. Would not be surprised to see an all region 9 semi-final match up.
