One hero at a time military benefit

MESQUITE, Nev. – Organized by a volunteer-based group with the mission of recognizing America’s true heroes, the men and women of the military, the second annual One Hero at a Time benefit event will be held April 12 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the CasaBlanca Event Center in Mesquite, Nev.

Live bands will be performing all day, including Phoenix, the Chris Bell Band, Aura Surreal, Sala, House of Sons, Beans & Wheels, Sucker Punch and Bottled Monkey. In between sets, host DJ Johnny Utah will keep the party pumped by spinning music and announcing winning raffle numbers. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase throughout the day. Come all day or stay for an hour; all are invited to this family-friendly event.

Before the event opens to the public, motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to participate in a two-hour ride starting at 9:30 a.m. in the CasaBlanca Event Center parking lot.

“One Hero at a Time is a wonderful event, which we are privileged to co-sponsor,” said Tammy Rambo, director of sales for Mesquite Gaming. “This is a fantastic opportunity to show our appreciation for our U.S. military men and women.”

The hero being honored this year is Army Staff Sgt. Travis Wood of Cedar City. Wood was on a recovery mission in southern Afghanistan in 2007 when three anti-tank mines nearly claimed his life. He not only lost his lower right leg, but sustained several spinal cord and pelvic injuries, as well as severe internal organ damage, including a partially paralyzed right lung. He has endured 84 surgeries to repair these injuries.

After spending over two-and-a-half years in recovery at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., he was finally able to resume life with his family, which, given the extent of his injuries, has been anything but easy. In spite of all he has been through, Wood, his wife and their three children feel blessed that he is alive today and they are able to be together again as a family, doing “normal” things like fishing and camping.

This inspiring and heroic soldier is currently attending college at Southern Utah University in hopes that he can become a middle school and high school teacher, and give even more to a community for which he has already sacrificed so much.

A donation of $20 provides access to the full day of live music, food, fun and raffles. All proceeds are being given directly to Wood and his family, who will be on hand all day to greet everyone who comes out to support them.

This inspiring young soldier and his family have sacrificed a great deal in service of their country. Mesquite Gaming invites everyone to join in giving back to this hero.
