16-year-old falls to his death in Cane Beds

ST. GEORGE – Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of 1800 East and Cane Beds Road in Cane Beds, Ariz., Sunday morning when a person was reported to have fallen while hiking and may not have survived his injuries.

Rulon Jessop, 16, of St. George, was apparently camping in the area with his adult uncles and his younger brother,  Mohave County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Patricia Carter said. Investigations determined that the group was climbing on the face of a rock to reach a cave Sunday morning when Jessop slipped and fell approximately 100 feet to the rock’s bottom.

“One of the uncles jumped in his vehicle and went to where he could get reception and called 911,” Carter said. Colorado City Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and the Sheriff’s Office was asked to respond as well.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the location at 11:58 a.m. Fire Department personnel were already on scene and declared Jessop deceased.

It was an accident, Carter said. The victim’s body was recovered and released to the Mohave County Medical Examiner.

“I’ll do a complete examination of the body and through my X-rays and examination, if I don’t find enough external injuries to say that it was a fall, we need to determine the cause of death,” Mohave County M.E. Rexene Worrell said. “… If there are injuries that are consistent with a fall, I can document those without an autopsy.”

Worrell’s examination is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
