Mesquite woman sentenced for cancer fundraiser scam

MESQUITE, Nev. — A mesquite woman who was charged with 95 counts of fraud in September 2013 for bilking community members in a fund raising scheme claiming her son had a rare form of liver cancer was sentenced on Monday.

According to information provided by the Mesquite Police Department, Shawnanna Starr Guerrero Florez, 36, pled guilty in the Mesquite Municipal Court to three misdemeanor offenses of obtaining money under false pretenses, obstruction of justice and unlawful acts involving electronic mail or transmission of other data.

Mesquite pro tem judge Ruth Kolhoss sentenced Flores to serve 12 months in the Mesquite Detention Center. Flores was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $745.26, complete a mental health evaluation and complete 500 hours of community service dedicated to assisting victims of cancer, the statement said.

Flores was sentenced after arguments were presented by Deputy City Attorney, Bob Sweetin and Flores’ defense attorney. During the sentencing hearing numerous victims testified how Flores’ scam affected them and the community.

It was reported by the police that Flores claimed her 7-year-old son had a rare form of liver cancer and several fund raisers were set up including a car wash and donation jars at various Mesquite businesses. A fund was set up at Wells Fargo Bank and future fundraisers had been planned when Flores was arrested.

I like the part where she has to do community service with cancer victims. Just make sure she doesn’t go rifling through their purses while no one’s not looking. Seems like the woman has no moral compass whatsoever.
