ST GEORGE — Two separate accidents occurred in one line of cars as drivers were making their way to Desert Hills High School in St. George this morning.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., a line of vehicles was backed up on River Road near its intersection with Brigham Road. These cars were waiting to turn right toward Desert Hills High School, St. George Police Officer Jeremy Needles said on scene.

Two separate rear-end accidents occurred, Needles said; one at the front of the line, and one, a few cars back from the first accident. The vehicles were able to pull off onto the shoulder, as St. George Police responded.  All of the vehicles were driving to the High School, Needles said.

One vehicle, a gold Dodge Neon incurred radiator damage, and was towed. The other three vehicles were driven from the scene although some of them had minor damage.

No known injuries occurred in the incident, Needles said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by the authorities and may not contain the full scope of findings.

I have 3 daughters that walk to school from Hidden Valley Heights… the driving of the High School kids in this area is absolutely ATROCIOUS! One of these days someones kid is going to get killed by an out of control, distracted, speeding, following too closely teen because they don’t care to think about any other person around them but themselves. I am angry that the school district didn’t plan the parking situation better on these campuses as well as implementing a better school start time with an elementary, middle school, and high school (all 3 basically sharing the same campus). And to top it off all 3 of these schools start/end at very near the exact same time when many small children are walking to/from school! With the curvature of the roads on both Brigham Road and Desert Hills Drive… combined with the propensity for driving fast and lack of police presence for the morning and afternoon commute… it is just a matter of time…. mark my words. This is extremely poor planning and a disconcerted effort towards safety. Slow Down!

It is the school district’s fault that teens drive bad?

Really Scot? That’s what you got out of Brian’s comment…Ridiculous!!!

Did the school district know that high school students would be driving to school? YES Did the school district know that they wanted to put a middle school and elementary school right next to the high school? YES Did the school district know that high density housing is in this exact same area before building the middle and high school campus? YES Did the school district create a parking lot that has NOT ONE crosswalk leading from the parking lot to the other side of the street? YES Did the school district NOT put in a light at any parking lot exit of either the middle school and high school parking lot exit so little kids don’t have to wait for speedy teenagers to pull out/in the parking lot? YES I could go on and on. If you don’t think that the school district and city planned poorly and hold a level of culpability… then I suggest you come over during the mornings that school is held and ask your young children to try to navigate this mess. Know it all!

Time to raise the legal driving age to 18.

HIGH SCHOOL KIDS ARE ALREADY PRETTY DUMB. THEN THEY LEARN THE TAILGATING HABIT DIRECTLY FROM MOM AND DAD.

Maybe we should hold the parents personally responsible for their kids actions. Maybe then parents would spend the time necessary to teach their kids responsibility.
