Enriego “Rick” John Alcayaga

Alcayaga, Rick Obit(February 15, 1937 – March 12, 2014)

Enriego “Rick” John Alcayaga, passed away March 12, 2014 in Santa Clara, UT. Rick was born February 15, 1937 to Juan E. and Maria DeCordero Alcayaga in Chicago, Illinois where he was raised.

He grew up in the 40’s and 50’s, a time when the country was growing fast and offering many career opportunities.

Early on, Rick realized a talent for Art. He worked at Western Electric as a draftsman for several years. After his U.S. Army service and discharge, he decided to pursue a career in the graphic arts field. In 1960, he enrolled and attended the Art Center College in Los Angeles. After several years of training, he took his first job with a small ad agency as a production artist.

The next decade saw Rick changing agencies in the country including Foote, Cone & Belding and Wayne Smith of Beverly Hills. His positions varied from Art Director to Ad Designer. He produced ads and ad campaigns for a wide variety of clients and products. He was rewarded creatively and economically with this profession.

In the early 80’s two life-impacting events occurred. First, he married his love, Gwen, whom he said gave him the most important, meaningful happiness in his life. And, second, he started RA Graphics, his own Art Service. In 1993, both Rick and his wife Gwen retired from work and moved to St. George, an area they both loved for its beauty, active lifestyle and friendliness.

Rick loved athletics and was always involved in sports. He loved Softball, Bowling and Golf, as did Gwen. This area couldn’t have been better suited for both of them. He was an active participant in the Huntsman Senior Games and won a worthy share of medals.

Other notes on Rick’s life are that he loved motorcycle touring, as did Gwen. He was a member of the Elks for several years. He enjoyed Chess and was a member of the St. George Chess Club. His art skills earned him two notable awards of recognition during his life, a CA Award of Excellence in 1965 and a N.Y. Retailer’s award for sales impact in 1971, both very prestigious compliments.

Rick had many friends throughout his life. He treasured them all. He requested the following message be included in this notice: “To all my friends. I want to thank you for your friendship, your support, your encouragement. You have enriched my life beyond measure and I hope my presence in your lives has been of value as well. In my last few years, it was memories of times we shared that brought me great comfort. Thanks, again, and maybe we’ll meet on the other side.”
