ST. GEORGE – The 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games Open will begin its five-week competition worldwide Thursday.
Commonly known as the “sport of fitness,” CrossFit competitions differ from other sports, such as triathlons, by making the ability to specify training nearly impossible. CrossFit aims at targeting all-around fitness by utilizing an unpredictable workout routine, called WOD, or workout of the day.
Beginning November 2013, Ryan and Aimee Wright, owners and personal trainers of CrossFit 435 in Hurricane, came up with the idea of local CrossFit camaraderie and approached Kyle Boyer, of CrossFit Dixie in St. George, to see if he wanted to participate in local competitions they coined “Neighborhood Throwdowns.”
Boyer thought it was a great idea, Ryan Wright said. After that, local CrossFit boxes, which are facilities especially designed for this sport, including SRP in St. George, Zion in St. George and Oasis in St. George, came together to host the monthly Neighborhood Throwdowns.
“We wanted to do something to give back to athletes,” Ryan Wright said.
Neighborhood Throwdowns offer two levels of competition: open division and advanced division. Competition is open to anyone interested and the WOD is announced at the time of the competition.
Depending on the division, the WODs will vary in skill level. The open division is a great start for beginners and features less technical workouts, while the advanced division may include more technical workouts such as handstand walks, heavy lifting or rope climbing.
“We get around 80 athletes who compete each month in our throwdowns. Competition is open to anyone who wants to compete or watch. The cost is $10,” Ryan Wright said.
CrossFit 435 has also hosted three fundraisers for fallen members of Hurricane’s community including Jada Harris, Brian Scott, and Josh Fitts. In all they have raised $12,000 to help support local families after a loss.
This year, CrossFit 435 hopes to make it to regionals in the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Game worldwide Open competition that begins Thursday.
Around 20 to 30 athletes will be registered with CrossFit 435 to compete in the worldwide Open, Ryan Wright said. Athletes may submit their scores for the weekly workout as many times as they would like up until that workout’s deadline.
The games are entirely operated by thousands of affiliations from all over the world and there are no requirements for who can participate.
The first workout will be announced live from CrossFit North Atlanta at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Find out more by checking out CrossFit Games website.
