Kalamity dancing for Sheila, benefit concert

ST. GEORGE – It has been an emotional and financial roller-coaster ride for the family of a yoga instructor who passed away suddenly from a rare form of leukemia one month ago. A benefit to help the family cover some of those expenses will be held Feb. 22 at Desert Hills High School in St. George.

After an all-day yoga retreat in Las Vegas, Sheila Brown, co-founder of Be Hot Yoga Studio in St. George, caught pneumonia which sent her body on a downward spiral. The infection entered her bloodstream and traveled to the rest of her body, leaving her in a weak and vulnerable state, according to the Fight for Sheila Facebook page. After being in the Intensive Care Unit for over a week, she was also diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that led to her passing on Jan. 18.

Kalamity, a professional contemporary hip-hop group, will be performing to raise funds to help Brown’s family with medical and funeral expenses.

Kalamity is directed by Tia Stokes, a dancer and choreographer who has performed with Beyoncé at the Billboard Music Awards and nationally televised NBA games. Stokes’s said her goal is to not only entertain audiences and educate students, but to give back to the community.

Each year, Kalamity and its sister group of student dancers, Kaos, choose a “Kause” in the local community to support and hold numerous fundraisers throughout the year.

A silent auction and bake sale will also take place throughout the evening.
