UPDATED: Road Advisory: Delays on I-15 through gorge growing, Old Highway 91 recommended

UPDATE: A disabled vehicle that was causing delays on southbound I-15 has been removed and traffic is moving without any problems, the Arizona Highway Patrol reported around 3:15  p.m., Monday. However, northbound traffic continues to experience delays and is currently backed up for a bout a mile.

MOHAVE COUNTY, Ariz. – Motorists are advised to avoid travel on Interstate 15 through the Virgin River Gorge if possible. The Arizona Highway Patrol has reported traffic delays on both northbound and southbound lanes through the gorge Monday afternoon, that is expected to continue into the evening.

“Heavy traffic is expected until about 8 p.m.,” AHP Sgt. John Bottoms said. “I would advise using Old Highway 91.”

As of 2 p.m., Bottoms said traffic on northbound I-15 is backed up for about a mile and growing. Southbound traffic is backed up for a half-mile and also growing.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is currently working on bridges in the gorge which has contributed to recent traffic delays.

It would be very helpful if the public was told HOW to access Old Highway 91. I have no idea where I would go to get on it in order to go around the Gorge.

Good point, Anon; we have provided that in the past. The alternate Old Highway 91 route to avoid traffic congestion in the Virgin River Gorge bypasses the gorge entirely, intersecting with I-15 at Littlefield, Ariz. to the south, and connecting to St. George at the north via Santa Clara and Sunset Boulevard; see map included in this previous report: http://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2013/05/27/kessler-paving-i15-end-of-may/#.UwODU0JdWwl

Thank you for the info. So I’m assuming that I can get on Sunset Boulevard and just keep driving and I will end up in Littlefield?
