ST. GEORGE – The Brown Bag Lecture series resumes for spring on Feb. 21 at the Interagency Information Center on East Riverside Drive in St. George with the topic, “Characters of the Beaver Dam Slope.”
Researcher Milt Hokanson will share the new oral history program being developed by the Bureau of Land Management and Southwest Utah’s National Conservation Land Friends.
Beaver Dam Wash is the area’s little piece of the Mojave Desert, a world away from the red cliffs of St. George. While most widely known for peaceful vistas and Joshua Tree forests, it also has a rich and varied history of ranching. Hokanson will share the best photos, videos and oral histories he has compiled of the cowboys out on the slope.
Every first and third Friday of the month, the Dixie/Arizona Strip Field office of the Bureau of Land Management hosts the popular Brown Bag Lecture series, providing unique opportunities for the public to learn more about the benefits of the area’s natural resources and public lands.
Speakers include geologists, range specialists, biologists, archaeologists, rangers and other specialists who will delve more deeply into subjects tied to the Arizona Strip and surrounding public lands.
For those who want to learn more before venturing out or are otherwise unable to access some of these remote and rugged landscapes, the lectures are an excellent way to bring the resources and related issues to the community’s doorstep.
The lectures run from noon to 1 p.m. Admission is free, but space is limited for this popular lecture series. Please obtain tickets in advance from the Interagency Information Center to reserve a seat.
The next lecture in the series will be held on March 7, on the topic of “Exploring the Wilderness.” The lecture will be led by Ashley Gilreath, Land Outreach Coordinator for Southwest Utah’s National Conservation Land Friends, on a photo-journey of some of the most remarkable wilderness areas in Southern Utah.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, the March 7 lecture will help participants learn more about this enduring piece of legislation. Remarkable in its own right, the act has undergone no major revisions since its inception. Gilreath will share how the Wilderness Act was born and recap some of the early days of its implementation.
The lecture series is sponsored by the Dixie/Arizona Strip Interpretive Association, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service.
