You missed a great SOCCER tournament at Staheli family farm!! Come check it out Monday…. 200 teams !!!
Pickle ball makes it into the paper, again? Our local paper makes no mention of the 2 huge soccer tournaments taking place this weekend in our town or the fact that the, Southern Utah’s President’s Cup had to be moved to Mesquite, N.V.!!! I’m thankful Mesquite has fields for us to use and for their open-armed welcome. 3 soccer tournaments in one weekend and we get nothing. Soccer is the largest sport in Utah. I would love to meet the puppet masters of this town and give them the 411. This is a joke! Shame on our local government & press! I apologize to all the awesome soccer teams, coaches and families who traveled so far to play on a disgusting, overcrowded and dangerous farm. This is embarrassing.
I think your issues run a lot deeper then soccer! To make such a big deal out of soccer games is telling. There are softball tournaments about every weekend that don’t get mentioned and they have been going on before soccer was a twinkle on local sports scene. Yet people aren’t on here getting all bent out of shape. So how did St George have a closed arm welcome? Shame on the local government? Your juvenile response is sad and I hope doesn’t reflect the majority that enjoy soccer!
Maybe I can speak to this somewhat, Melanie and Ken,
As far as St. George News is concerned, please note that we have given considerable coverage to soccer at the high school and college level. A simple search using the term “soccer” will pull up those stories. We covered youth soccer last February, here is a link to that including videocast: http://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2013/02/17/samodt-damodt-utah-youth-soccer-presidential-cup-tournaments-stgnews-videocast-photo-gallery/#.UwD4CEJdWwk
The reality is we don’t have the resources to cover every sport and every recreational competition at every venue every time. So what we do is make an effort to give feature to as many as we can from time to time, and it will vary.
That said, Melanie’s complaint, my apologies if that is not the right word, about limited venues in St. George for some of these tournaments is noted and may be something we’ll examine in story. We do appreciate that our area is prime venue for all sorts of sports and recreation and that there can be more demand than can always be accommodated. Perhaps that is a good problem to have? Depends upon one’s perspective.
We are grateful for the discussion, it benefits the people, yes? Discussions can bring about new things.
I hope that helps,

Ken,
I will not dignify your personal attacks toward me. I will however responed to a couple of points you mentioned. I believe in free press. I believe it is the responsibility of “the people” to keep our government honest, as well as the press.
The fact is that soccer is the largest and fastest growing sport in Utah, in spite of- our lack of dedicated fields. Now- that is saying something. I know our previous, Mayor Dan McArthur, refused contributions of over $150,00 to help built adequate fields for our community. The offer still stands and our current leader, Mayor Jon Pike, has been briefed on the soccer communities willingness to help.
Our cities ability to “host” tournaments, regardless of the sport- is wonderful! It can be a great economic boost for our city and local businesses. If you do a little research you will find that our government has “blacklisted” soccer. They are aware of the active soccer participant numbers, that dwarf all other sport numbers.
My motivation is not to tear down other sports. I hope to spark a mature conversation that will bring awareness to our community. I believe money should be spent on facilities that serve our communities needs first.
Softball tournaments take place frequently because the facilities are built. My complaints are based on facts. My family enjoys a very active lifestyle. We participate in basketball, soccer, tennis, mountain biking, skateboarding, wakeboarding, skimboarding, baseball and even pickle ball.
I have contact information for an individual whom purchased land and has the funds to built a giant complex out by the new airport. I can arrange a conversation with you both and he can explain how welcoming the city was toward him.
I am a mother. I will not gain monetarily or further a political career. I have no ulterior motives. I simply want to have an honest and open conversation about the needs of our sports community- based on facts.
If you built it, they will come.
Ken, I personally invite you to attend the final round of soccer games. February 17th, at Staheli Farms from sun up to sundown.
Joyce, I appreciate your response and invite you to look into this matter. I would appreciate having the news investigate and report on it. Please come to the tournament on, February 17th, at Staheli Farms. If you’re interested, I would like to meet you and talk about the problems we are facing.
Thank you,
Melanie
A lot of people do like soccer but its not an american sport.
