ST. GEORGE — Haley Bodnar, Desert Hills’ 6-foot-4 senior center, has been amazingly consistent over the past three-plus seasons, always scoring, always rebounding and always helping the Thunder win games. Tuesday night she was just a little bit more than consistent. The Purdue-bound star was spectacular, scoring a career-high 28 points and leading Desert Hills to a 78-39 road victory over Snow Canyon at the Jungle Gymnasium.

Bodnar, in her fourth year as a varsity player for Desert Hills and a her third full year as a starter, has scored at least eight points in every game this season. Tuesday night was the fourth time this year she has topped the 20-point plateau. Her previous career-high was 24 set a couple of times, but most recently at Hurricane a month ago.

Meanwhile, the Lady Thunder have proven they are far from a one-player team, with Blair Bliss (13 points) and Kenzie Done (11 points) also stepping up in this game. DH has seven players averaging at least four points a game, including seniors Karlee Myers, Emily Seifert and Kassidy Cox and freshman Ashley Beckstrand.

This game was a little bit of a contest early as Snow Canyon, struggling to stay in the upper echelon of Region 9, kept it to a 20-13 game through one quarter. But with Bodnar owning the paint and the offense starting to click, Desert Hills ran away with things in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Warriors 23-8 and pushing the halftime advantage to 43-21. Things got worse in the third quarter as the Thunder posted up another 20-plus point quarter to make it 68-27 after three and the benches were cleared after that.

Sn0w Canyon did enjoy the return of Grace Walton from a meniscus injury. She had four points in her comeback. The Warriors, who were led by Lauren Smith with eight points, have lost three straight and fall to 10-9 overall and 6-5 in region play. SC closes out the regular season at Dixie and needs a win to guarantee a playoff spot.

Desert Hills, an astounding 20-1 overall and 11-0 in region, has senior night Thursday night against Canyon View. DH has won 14 in a row.

Cedar 45, Hurricane 41

The Lady Reds went on a 9-0 run midway through the third quarter to capture the lead, then held off a furious Hurricane rally to get the key road win.

Down 21-17, Javlyn Weaver and McKenna Collins hit back to back baskets to tie the game for Cedar. Moments later Amanda Manley gave the Lady Reds their first lead since 2-0 on a fast-break basket. After a miss by the Tigers, Lisa Ballenger hit a 3-pointer for Cedar to complete the run and make it 26-21.

It was 31-24 at the end of three quarters, but the lady Tigers made their own run, cutting it to 38-37 with a basket by London Steglich midway through the fourth quarter, capping a 13-6 Hurricane run. But Cedar came back with consecutive baskets by Courtney Morley to push the lead back to five at 42-37 and Hurricane never got closer than three the rest of the way.

The Lady Reds got 12 points from Hannah Williams and 11 from Morley to lead the way. It was a huge win for Cedar, which is fighting to get into the playoffs with a 5-6 region record. Cedar, which is tied with Canyon View in a battle for the last playoff spot, finishes the regular season at last-place Pine View Thursday night.

This was Hurricane’s final regular-season game and the Tigers will head into the playoffs as the Region 9 No. 2-seed and will likely play next Friday night (Feb. 21). Hurricane will host the No. 3 seed from Region 11, the Tooele Buffaloes, who are 6-15 on the season.

Canyon View 43, Pine View 27

The Lady Falcons kept pace with Cedar and improved to 5-6 in region with the home win.

Josie Platt had 18 points in the victory for Canyon View, which improved to 9-10 overall. Platt jump-started the game with back to back 3-pointers right out of the gate, spotting the Falcons a 6-0 lead before most folks had settled into their seats.

Abbie Corry followed the two treys with a basket, making it 8-0 before Natasha Fiame finally got Pine View on the board to make it 8-2. That’s when Platt hit her third 3-pointer of the opening quarter to make it 11-2 with just a few minutes off the clock in the first period.

To Pine View’s credit, the Lady Panthers hung in there despite the slow start. Trailing 23-10 at halftime, PV closed to within 24-17 in the third quarter with a 3-pointer by Ashlie Richards helping the run. After a Falcons run to close the quarter made it 31-17, Pine View again rallied and got to within 31-25 in the fourth quarter before finally running out of gas.

Platt finished with 18 points and Corry had 10 to pace Canyon View, which needs a win Thursday at No. 1-ranked Desert Hills to make the playoffs.

For Pine View, Fiame had 7 points and 6 rebounds while Richards and tayvia Ah Quin had 6 points each. The Panthers, 0-19 and 0-11, finish the year at home vs. Cedar.
