Man falls off water tank near Black Rock Road, Ariz. Strip

ST. GEORGE — A man was injured at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday when he fell from the water tank near the Black Rock exit of Interstate 15 in Mohave County, Ariz.

Three people were hiking in the area on the hillside just south of the Black Rock exit when a man, 56, somehow fell about 15 feet from the top of the water tower, St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker said.

“Part of the hill goes into the water tank, there are no railings and the man must have stepped off or lost his balance,” Stoker said.

The St. George Communications Center was able to locate the injured man through GPS when his hiking companions called 911. Initially, rescue crews thought that the hikers may have been further away and Life Flight was on standby. However, first responders were able to locate the injured man and secured him on a back board and carried him about 30 feet to the ambulance, Stoker said.

In addition to St. George Fire Department, Beaver Dam Fire and Rescue, Mohave County Sheriff’s Department and and Arizona Department of Public Safety officers responded to the incident.

The injured man was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George by Gold Cross Ambulance with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, Stoker said.
