Fatal vehicle accident at Grand Canyon, victim named

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – The Coconino County Medical Examiner has identified the woman who died in a motor vehicle accident in Grand Canyon National Park on Friday as Yuan Gao, 24, of China.

At approximately 2:15 p.m. on Friday, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call about a two-car motor vehicle accident on South Entrance Road, approximately three miles north of the park’s South Entrance Station.

Gao was the passenger seated in the rear of the sedan involved in the accident. The driver and front seat passenger of the same car suffered noncritical injuries and were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle, a pickup truck, were uninjured.

A winter storm was producing sleet and snow prior to and during the motor vehicle accident and may have been a contributing factor to the incident.

Grand Canyon National Park public affairs officer said no further information is available at this time.
