Man locked in laundromat calls for help, ends up in jail

ST. GEORGE — A citizen assist call at a laundromat at 785 East St. George Blvd. resulted in the arrest of one man on drug charges in the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Police received a call from a man at about 12:45 a.m., stating he had been locked inside of the laundromat and apparently the business has a system where the doors automatically lock after a certain hour, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said.

According to the probable cause statement filed in conjunction with the arrest, when a canine officer arrived to investigate, the police dog, Marco, detected the presence of drugs in the man’s car.

The man told police that there were drugs in his car and a subsequent search turned up two syringes, one that had been used and had a brown liquid substance in it and a small clear plastic bag with a white crystal substance that was believed to be methamphetamine. Officers also found in the car multiple empty clear plastic bags, cotton swabs and a single prescription drug pill.

The suspect told officers that the clear brown substance in the needle was “meth” and that he had used methamphetamine earlier in the day.

Police arrested Jesse William James, 38, of St. George. and charged him with possession or use of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class-A misdemeanor. Both charges were enhanced because the arrest occurred within 1,000 feet of a school and as a result of multiple prior drug convictions, according to the report.

According to Fifth District Court records in Washington county, James was scheduled to be sentenced for several previous felony drug charges on March 18.

James was transported to Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Institute where his bail stands at $21,943.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

Let’s hope! He needs an arm around his shoulder or someone to reach out their hand and offer him a better way. There is hope, there is help.
