City of St. George offers Red Desert Clinic for youth softball with BYU head coach

ST. GEORGE – Getting advice from someone who has been there and done that can be invaluable and that’s one of the messages BYU head softball coach Gordon Eakin wants to get across to the youth of St. George. Saturday is the deadline for registration for the City of St. George’s Red Desert Classic Brigham Young Softball Clinic.

Eakin, his staff and his players will be holding a clinic for local youth softball players from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Canyons Softball Complex.

“We are so excited to have this clinic and hopefully have a lot of young people come and learn some of the basics and intricacies of softball,” Eakin said. “The youth in St. George will have a chance to see some high-quality Division I softball being played and then after our games Saturday, we will spend some time teaching and being with them.”

BYU, a top-notch program that has been to the NCAA Division I Regionals eight straight years and to the Super Regional in 2010, features Gordy Bravo, last year’s Pacific Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, and Eakin, the PCC Coach of the Year.

BYU has been shuttled through four conferences in four years, but has maintained a program of excellence, winning the Mountain West Conference in 2011, The Western Athletic Conference in 2012 and the PCC in 2013. The Cougars will compete in the West Coast Conference when the season begins next month.

The clinic, which is open to all youth ages 8 to 18, will focus on softball fundamentals with Eakin and assistants Pete Meredith, Kristin Delahoussaye and Chris Linde, plus the team’s 18 roster players, helping young players with the basics of batting, bunting, slap-hitting (hit-and-run), base running, sliding, pitching, catching and fielding.

There will also be a Q & A period for players to address individual issues they may be having on the softball field.

“We wanted to host our own tournament and it’s the perfect time of year to have one down there in St. George,” Eakin said. “The proximity to Provo and, of course, the great weather, make it just right to have the tournament and clinic there.”

Softball players can register individually for the clinic online with individual cost being $35 per player. Teams can also register with a discount. Teams cost just $250 or just $25 per player with a maximum of 10 players. Teams may have more than 10 players at a cost of $25 each.

Registration deadline is Feb. 1.

The clinic culminates the Larry H. Miller Red Desert Classic Softball Tournament, which features 12 Division I softball programs competing in a Round Robin format at St. George’s Canyons Softball Complex.

Included in the tourney are regional favorites BYU, Southern Utah, Weber State and Utah Valley.

Saturday’s clinic is hosted and sponsored by St. George City’s Recreation division.
