SALT LAKE CITY – On Wednesday, the Utah League of Cities and Towns will host approximately 900 youth city and town council members from over 40 municipalities for “Local Officials’ Day at the Legislature” at the Utah State Capitol.
Councils from LaVerkin, Cedar City and Parowan will represent Southern Utah at the function.
During mock committee hearings, youth will discuss to what degree oversight of school administrators is appropriate in students’ internet use, and cyberbullying and the penalties that should follow when online harassment is apparent. Their debate will be witnessed by a panel of Utah lawmakers, who may choose to incorporate the dialogue in the upcoming legislative session.
“Local Officials’ Day at the Legislature is a valuable opportunity to see government in action,” said Susan Wood, director of communications and training for the Utah League of Cities and Towns. “Youth councils will have the opportunity to participate in mock committee hearings on issues pertinent to them and visit with the elected officials who represent them. They will learn firsthand what it’s like to participate in the legislative process and make a difference in their own communities.”
Following the hearings, council members will be treated to a “Family Feud”-style competition between the Utah House of Representatives and Senate in front of a live audience at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Contestants include House Speaker Rebecca Lockhart and Senate President Wayne Niederhauser, with legendary game show emcee Chuck Woolery as host. Using questionnaires about everyday life in Utah completed by the students, legislators will be tested on their quick responses to see if they can match what the “survey says.”
