Sign-ups needed, bring ‘God is not Dead’ movie to St. George

ST. GEORGE – Three words: God is dead. Three words, controversial and emotional, drive the plot of a movie to be shown in St. George once 500 names are gathered, committing to ticket purchases.

The movie “God’s Not Dead” features Kevin Sorbo, Shane Harper, Kevin A.R. Wright, Dean Cain, and special appearances from Willie and Korie Robertson from Duck Dynasty, and Christian band, the Newsboys.

The plot

“God is not Dead” centers around college freshman Josh Wheaton, whose deeply-rooted Christian faith is questioned by Professor Radisson on the first day of school.

Radisson wants to make sure all his students start off his philosophy class on the same page on the first day of school.  He tells his students that they need to denounce that God exists or they will fail the class. And then he asks his students to write three simple words on a piece of paper: God is Dead.

Not so simple, those words, in the eyes of Wheaton. He refuses to write them down because of his Christian belief. And so, Radisson gives him a challenge, a challenge to prove God’s existence through research, evidence, and a head-to-head debate between Wheaton and Radisson.  If Wheaton’s classmates are not convinced that God does in fact live, he will fail the class.

Many would think it would just be easier to write those three words on a piece of paper and move on with their schooling, but to Josh Wheaton, defending his faith in God exceeds his future academic plans.

Bringing the movie to St. George

Pastor Ray Schroeder of St. George Community Church and Kristi Thompson of Southland Bible Church are working with Christian church leaders in the St. George area to bring this film to St. George. In order to do so, they need to guarantee  500 ticket preorders for the weekend of March 21.

When Schroeder took interest in the film, he contacted the group ticket sales manager in Nashville, Tenn., learning of the 500-ticket preorder requirement. Then he coordinated with Thompson upon learning she has worked to bring other faith-based movies to St. George.

“I think we can do that because the town had a Matthew West Concert that was sold out,” Schroeder said, “and I thought the churches in the community could get behind this.”

The effort gained 200 commitments in the first three days, Thompson said.

Across the country there have been over 2,700 responses to the group ticket sales manager and around 500 cities are planning on bringing this movie to their towns. According to Charisma News, “the trailer for this film, posted on the popular social networking site (Facebook), has racked up 6.5 million views, 1.4 million likes and has been shared 720,981 times” as of the first week in January.

Encouragement and outreach

“I am hoping that it will be an encouragement to students to not lose their faith (while) in college … ,” Schroeder said, “and also challenge those who are not Christians, who are not believers to end up to come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. It would be a great witnessing opportunity.”

“My hope is that all those who attend this movie will be able to clearly see that there is a concise, evidence-based argument for God’s existence,” Thompson said. “College students, in particular, are often being taught that logic and reasoning easily dismiss God. The movie ‘God’s Not Dead’ takes on the challenge of giving thorough, theistic answers to even the toughest critic. Demonstrated within the movie are nine proofs of God’s existence. My hope is that filmgoers will walk away pondering how the very existence of God gives meaning and purpose to life.”

LOL, looks like it could be a fun movie. I’ll wait for it to come to netflix.

Anyways I’ve never seen any actual evidence of the bible god or the mormon god…

The godless university professor; the favorite boogie man in every fundamentalist Christian wet dream. What you wanna bet he gets his comeuppance?

No, judging by the scene where he’s getting teary eyed I think he probably gets “saved” and becomes a born-again minister.
