ST. GEORGE – Ivins resident and Southern Utah University student Beau Condie will be on the CBS game show “The Price is Right” on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

“Well just like most of America I grew up watching Bob Barker on ‘The Price is Right,’” Condie said. “Can’t say I was ever good at guessing retail prices, but I would tune in. I’ve also had the game inspired by the show on my iPhone for quite some time and would play that for fun.”

Condie never imagined that his app would help him on the actual show. His friend Jon Frehner convinced Condie to come with him to “The Price is Right” show after he had secured four priority tickets to two different tapings of the show, along with tickets to Conan. They brought Evan Whipple and Cody Sanders, all from Southern Utah University, to travel with them. Frehner and Condie studied organic chemistry during the trip and while standing in line for the show in hopes that their trip wouldn’t hurt their studies too much.

They made it to the first taping and went through the process of filling out paperwork and meeting with the producers.

“The producer was a super polite and witty character,” Condie said. “He would always have great follow-up questions and one-liners based on your remarks. He takes roughly 20 people at a time and makes his way down talking to you for a few moments each.”

The producer enjoyed Condie and spent more time talking with him than the other audience members, Condie said.

He told the producer he loved the game Cliffhangers and they talked briefly, he said. After, his friends thought he would definitely be called to “come on down” during the taping. The producers placed Condie, Frehner, Whipple and Sanders directly behind the contestants’ row and waited for Condie’s name to be called. Condie said he and his friends were repeatedly denied high fives by the contestants whose names were called as they came down to the podium.

The energy in the studio was incredible, Condie said, and the four friends had fun cheering on the contestants as they played. The taping ended and Condie’s name was never called. None of Condie and his friends made it onto the stage their first time at the show, which will be broadcast Jan. 27. The taping went a little later than expected and they missed their tickets to see Conan as well. They left disappointed, but decided to come back for the next taping.

They repeated the process of paperwork and producers.

“This time the producer said, ‘We’ll be looking for you.’ So again hope rekindled within me and I was stoked for the second taping,” Condie said. “Then the announcer began calling down the first four contestants. I just zoned out and was preparing my mind for the possibility that I might not get called up. My friends just started screaming at me and pushed me up. Lo and behold they had called my name and with the noise in the studio I hadn’t even heard my name be called to ‘Come on Down!’ … I ran up to the podiums like a crazed person and celebrated with the other contestants.”

Drew Carey came on stage and it was a dream come true for Condie and friends. The first item for bid was a Burton Snowboarding package which Condie won and was taken on stage.

I jumped around and approached Drew awkwardly not knowing what to do as if I was in the presence of a supernatural being,” Condie said. “Obviously that premeditated game show performance I had going on my mind quickly fled me. I just remember feeling like everything was blurring together.”

Condie played the game Switch where he was shown two prizes, each with a price. Condie had to decide whether the prices were correct as is, or should be switched. If correct, he wins both prizes. Condie isn’t able to discuss the outcome but teased that everyone should watch if they want to see what happened.

“The Price is Right” is hosted by Drew Carey with Mike Richards and Jennifer Mullin as the executive producers.
