ST. GEORGE – Mark your calendars because a new round of rodeo events are about to begin in Beaver Dam, Ariz. The first rodeo starts Saturday at 10 a.m. MST at the AZ Strip Riders Club Arena at 100 Mitchell Drive, in Beaver Dam.

The AZ Riders Club Arena is a place to enjoy the sport of Equine Gymkhana – a horseback riding event, often emphasizing children’s participation, consisting of speed pattern racing and timed games for riders on horse – where “having fun is a must” and all ages and riding abilities are welcome.

“This club was put together for the kids to learn about the sport and have good sportsmanship,” Brandy Luscomb, AZ Strip Riders Club board member said.

“It’s not about who is better or fast here … it’s about having fun.”

The club plans on having amazing awards this year, including saddles for the youth age groups, Luscomb said. The club utilizes stop watches for official horse run times.

“We will only have handheld stop watches for timers, that’s how we run things around here and have always done it this way,” Luscomb said.

There are two timers at all times in the arena so there is no discrepancy in times. All members over age 14 are welcome to help time and one of the board members will be in the arena at all times.

Year-end awards will be given in December. Participants have to attend 6 out of the 8 events to qualify for year-end awards.

Membership

A membership is required for individuals to participate in the events and membership forms must be signed and notarized no later than the second event to be able to participate. Membership is $10 per person or $35 for a family living in the same house. Member event participation fees are $5 each with a $3 arena fee per person. There is no spectator fee.

Last year the club had 40 members and this year they are already at 100 members before the day of their first event where they expect to have more members signup, Luscomb said.

“We do not charge a lot at these events,” Luscomb said. “We make it affordable for everyone to come and have fun and 100 percent of the money goes straight to the awards fund. We don’t make a single penny on these events.”
