Falcons earn first region win with stunner at Dixie

ST. GEORGE — No one really should be surprised in this crazy Region 9, but Canyon View got its first win Friday night. On the road. At Dixie. The same Dixie that just beat Snow Canyon and earlier had beaten Desert Hills.

Koy Huxford scored 13 points and Sterling Barnes added 10 as the Falcons got up early and never surrendered the lead on the road to improve to 1-4 in region play. Canyon View outscored Dixie 15-8 in the first quarter and led 30-21 at the half. The Flyers rallied to within 40-35 by the end of the third quarter, but couldn’t get closer than three before finally falling 53-49.

Dixie got 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, from Jake Hawes and R.J. Wilgar added 15, but it wasn’t enough as the Flyers fall to 2-3 in region play.

Dixie endured a miserable shooting night from the field, but the Flyers kept themselves in it by making 11 of their 13 free throws.

It is only the second win since early December for the Falcons, who are now 4-11 overall. Canyon View finishes the first go-round in region play with a home game vs. Hurricane Wednesday night.

Dixie, whose season has resembled a Katy Perry song (Hot and then cold, up and then down …), fell to 9-5 overall. The Flyers have beaten good teams (Snow Canyon, Salem Hills, Stansbury) and lost to not so good teams (Hurricane, Canyon View). Dixie plays at Cedar Wednesday night to close out the first half of region play, hoping to get a win and end the first half even up at 3-3.

The Flyers were once again playing without the services of post Sam Guymon, who has missed two straight games since a late-game concussion suffered against Pine View. Guymon has been cleared to play, though, and should return next week.
