CEDAR CITY —  Good defense and the always dependable Quincy Mathews led Desert Hills to a 59-45 road win Wednesday night at Canyon View.

Desert-Hills-smcanyon-view-smMathews, a junior swingman, scored 16 points and sixth man Jordan Hokanson made four 3-pointers as the Thunder put the game away in the fourth quarter. Taylor Houston also had a nice game, picking up 13 points, 7 rebounds and a blocked shot.

Desert Hills started quick, leading 9-3 and 13-7 in the first quarter behind 3-pointers by Hokanson. Canyon View battled back to within 13-9 on a bucket by Brycen Bybee just before the quarter ended. But the Thunder opened the second period with five quick points to push the lead out to nine at 18-9. Eventually, DH would open up a double-digit advantage as Hokanson and Trey Tanner scored consecutive baskets for a 25-15 advantage. But the never-say-die Falcons closed the half on a 7-2 run, with Ty Nielson hitting a 3-pointer, to make it a 27-22 game at intermission.

Things started to look dicey on the road for the Thunder when CV opened the second half with five quick points to complete a 12-2 run and tie the score at 27-27. After a pair of DH scores and a free throw by each team, Koy Huxford nailed a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game at 32-31 still early in the third quarter. That would be the last gasp for the Falcons, though, as Desert Hills took the game over from there, going on an 11-0 run, with Houston hitting three baskets in the strong stretch for DH.

Canyon View got within six at 48-42 midway through the fourth quarter, but Desert Hills closed the game on an 11-3 run, with Mathews nailing free throws late to ice the win. Mathews was 8 of 9 from the line, while the rest of the Thunder were 7 of 13. Mathews also dished out six assists in the game.

Desert Hills, now 8-5 overall and 3-1 in region play, held Canyon View to just 29 percent shooting in the game (14 for 48) and out-rebounded the Falcons 40-16. The Thunder play Pine View at the Thunderdome Friday night in a game that will be Triplecast on CEC-TV (Baja Cable 22), STGNews.com and ESPN 106.1 FM Radio.

Canyon View, 3-11 and 0-4, plays at Dixie Friday night.
