ST. GEORGE — With Region 9 games beginning Wednesday, the St. George News sports staff helps prepare fans for the 2013-14 region season with a series of boys basketball previews.
HURRICANE TIGERS
Head Coach: Todd Langston
2012-2013 Record: 1-19 (7th in region with 0-12 record)
2013 Postseason: Did not qualify
Key Returners: Jayce Housley, Kaden Langston, Cody LeBaron, Austen Beatty
Key Losses: Garet Cahoon, Adam Massey
Probable Starters: Langston, LeBaron, Beatty, Jordan Ence, Erik Mitchell
Key Substitutes: Housley, Jeremiah Ieremia, Mitchell Vaifanua
Lineup: The Tigers had a rebuilding season last year under second-year head coach Brian Vaifanua. Vaifanua has moved on, leaving the team to Todd Langston. While Langston inherits a 1-19 team, he does bring back several players with quality varsity experience. The backcourt will be led by the coach’s son, Kaden. He will be joined by team captain and defensive specialist Erik Mitchell. Up front, the post will be manned by Jordan Ence. Ence will have help in the middle from imposing Jeremiah Ieremia. On the wings, Cody LeBaron and Austin Beatty will probably start. Expect Jayce Housley and Mitchell Vaifanua to also see plenty of action.
Outlook: The Tigers are comparatively smaller than other teams in the region. They will have to rely on their quickness, depth and experience to overcome their size disadvantage.
Coach says: “Hopefully we can overcome other teams’ size by spreading the floor,” said Coach Langston. “We plan to double down on bigger, talented big men and then run and run and run. I think that will neutralize any disadvantage we have.”
