Dixie State hoops: Pine View alum Garrett sparks Storm win

BELMONT, Calif. – Dixie State head coach Jon Judkins stresses that if his team plays defense, rebounds the basketball and runs, good things are bound to happen.

An early stretch in the first half saw Louis Garrett score 10 of his game-high 22 points during a 14-0 scoring run to lead the No. 10 Red Storm to a 72-54 road win over Notre Dame de Namur in Pacific West Conference play.

DSU held the Argonauts to 9 of 28 shooting in the first half (32 percent) while forcing 12 turnovers.

dsulogoGarrett ripped down nine rebounds and had five steals to cap a solid night off the bench.

Kimball Payne added 13 points and Dalton Groskreutz hit all eight free throws he attempted en route to 10 points for the undefeated Storm (5-0, 1-0 PacWest). NDNU had long spells of scoreless play and the Argos could never close the gap within 10 points from the midway point of the first half.

Dixie State opened the game on a 6-0 run. DeQuan Thompson and Zach Robbins each had lay-ins while Payne added a short elbow jumper. NDNU responded with a pair of 3-pointers to knot the game.

Garrett then took over. A tipped ball on defense led to a steal and a one-handed slam sparked a spurt. Garrett added a second dunk and had two lay-ins to push the DSU lead to 20-6. Two Groskreutz charity shots built the lead to 21 points, 32-11, with 4:35 left before the half.

The Argos closed the half on an 11-4 run, but Dixie State held a 36-22 advantage at the break.

Dixie State held any second-half charge from the Argos by shooting 57.9 percent over the final 20 minutes.

Don Washington had 17 points and seven rebounds for NDNU. The Argonauts bested the battle of the boards 32-30.

Conference play for DSU continues Saturday at Fresno Pacific. The Storm will look to remain undefeated and avenge its first conference loss from one year ago at the FPU Special Events Center. Tip time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
