Missing hikers found in San Juan County

SAN JUAN COUNTY – Five hikers from Colorado, reported missing Sunday, have been found alive and in good condition in San Juan County Monday.

According to a statement from San Juan County Emergency Management, the five hikers, all between 18-21 years old and college students from Colorado, entered the Elk Ridge area of the Manti La Sal Mountains Thursday to go hiking. The hikers made it through the storm that passed through the region on Friday and Saturday. One of the hikers contacted family members Sunday morning, though when the group failed to contact family by Sunday afternoon, they were reported missing.

San Juan County Search and Rescue searched the area by snow mobile to locate where the hikers’ vehicle was believed to be located. The search continued Monday morning until the hikers were eventually spotted by a Classic Lifeguard helicopter by early afternoon.

The five hikers were shuttled out by San Juan County Search and Rescue via snowmobiles. The hikers appear to be in good condition.
