Thanksgiving Basket Brigade gears up to feed local families

Screen Shot 2013-11-21 at 4.22.46 PMST. GEORGE — One way to make Thanksgiving more meaningful for all families this year is through a program called the Southern Utah Basket Brigade where giving through donations or time is received with gratitude and appreciation.

Thanksgiving is a time for turkey, Indian corn and pumpkin pie. It is a time to gather and celebrate. For most families, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and give thanks for all that they have – a roof overhead, food on the table and clothing to wear.

Thanksgiving is also the perfect time to think about all of the people who may not have experienced all of those blessings, whose needs often go unmet, and who do not share in some of the same luxuries.

The Basket Brigade makes it easy to show love and selflessness by helping others share a warm meal. The Brigade is asking for a $40 donation to feed one family dinner this Thanksgiving holiday. With a goal to help 100 local families this year, the Basket Brigade is hoping to raise $4,000. People are welcome to donate, volunteer or even nominate a family online.

The Basket Brigade concept was inspired by Anthony Robbins more than 30 years ago as an individual effort to feed families in need. These Basket Brigades now feed more than 2 million people annually in countries all over the world between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“Each family that is helped is for a special reason, they may have just lost a family member, a job or even a place to stay,” Basket Brigade volunteer Jennifer Beasley said. “I hope and pray that we can find the means to help the families in our own community have a little cheer this season of thankfulness.”

The Basket Brigade’s main event takes place on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Abbey Inn in St George, where volunteers will put together and deliver care baskets to local families in need during Thanksgiving that might otherwise not have the means to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Basket Brigade is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Individual and corporate donations are tax deductible and can be made online. All major credit cards are accepted and 100 percent of the donations go towards buying food.
