WASHINGTON, D.C. – Utah’s Sens. Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee are both supporting an effort to fully refund Utah and other states that reopened national parks during the recent government shutdown.
Several states entered into individual agreements with the U.S. National Park Service allowing the state to pay for reopening parks closed during the shutdown. Hatch and Lee have cosponsored an amendment introduced by Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., to the National Defense Authorization Act that would fully repay states that came to this agreement with the NPS.
“Refunding states for doing the work of the federal government just makes sense,” Hatch said. “I applauded state leaders last month for taking the strong step to front the operating costs for the national parks while the government was shut down, and the state and Utah taxpayers deserve to be reimbursed.”
“It is crucial that the National Park Service and the state of Utah continue to be good partners, and refunding the state of Utah for their remarkable efforts certainly is in keeping with that partnership,” Lee said. “We will continue to work with the delegations of Arizona and Utah to create a positive resolution to this issue.”
