MESQUITE, Nev. – The closing ceremony for the eighth annual One Thousand Flags Over Mesquite will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. PST, 3 p.m. MST, taking place at the Mesquite Recreation Center in Mesquite, Nev. The Exchange Club of Mesquite hosts the event.
One Thousand American flags have filled the west field of the recreation center for the past week in honor of U.S. veterans. The flags represent and honor all veterans, living and deceased.
Mayor pro tem Geno Withelder will open the ceremonies followed by Pastor Rick Casebolt’s invocation. Mesquite Justice and Municipal Court Judge Ryan Toone and wounded warrior Joseph Perez will offer remarks followed by the flag retirement ceremony conducted by the Mesquite Fire Department.
Closing ceremonies will include patriotic musical selections from local groups including Mesquite’s own Treble Makers. Dennis Hangey will perform Amazing Grace on his bagpipes with a closing of taps by Ron Bird.
Nearly 200 youths, ages 7-18, self-organized a memorial Thursday evening.
“These were the best behaved kids ever witnessed as they connected to our veterans and the cost of freedom,” Paul Benedict said.
Visitors are welcome to walk the field any time day or night until the closing ceremony begins. Volunteers work three-hour shifts 24/7 standing watch over the flags and the memories they represent.
The Exchange Club of Mesquite is a major supporter of local veterans’ programs and services in the Virgin Valley, and One Thousand Flags Over Mesquite is a primary fundraiser.
Eureka Casino and Hotel, Bank of Nevada, Cucina Italiana, Southwest Spirit and America First Credit Union, along with other local businesses, sponsor the event.
