ST. GEORGE – Community members, veterans, family and friends gathered at the St. George Vet Center for a flag raising ceremony taking after the famous recognizable photo of the soldiers raising a flag at Iwo Jima during World War II. Among the attendees were newly elected St. George City Council members, Joe Bowcutt and Michele Randall.
The Southern Utah Chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders sponsored the flag ceremony and helped put the new flag pole up for the vet center. The Southern Utah PGR, along with help from the veterans from the Disabled American Veterans, put in all the time and effort for the flag and the ceremony, said Danille Weaver, office manager at the Vet Center.
The new flag pole will help direct people to the St. George Vet Center, located at 1664 South Dixie Drive, Suite C-102 in St. George. The St. George Vet Center is purposed toward helping veterans readjust to daily life. It offers individual, couples, and family programs.
Bruce Solomon a Vietnam War veteran and readjustment counselor at the St. George Vet Center helped lead the flag pole installation ceremony.
The battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in which the U.S. Armed Forces captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese. This was a strategic battle to capture the island and make it a home base for attacking the Japanese main island.
