ST. GEORGE – An Ivins man, who has no affiliation with any police department, was arrested Tuesday for impersonating an officer after he called the actual police for backup during a phony traffic stop.
St. George Police have been searching for a man who has been allegedly impersonating officers for awhile now. They have had multiple reports of a man following people in his personal vehicle, approaching them, and making claims that he was a police officer.
“It took us a little while to track him down,” St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said.
They tracked him down on Monday evening and arrested Ruben Wayne Holt, 19, of Ivins, near 1000 East and St. George Boulevard. Holt had pulled behind a parked car, approached the driver, and then called the St. George Police for backup. Police responded to his call with his subsequent arrest.
It is suspected mental issues may have played a part in Holt’s situation, Despain said. That is the police department’s best guess pending official verification, he said.
“(Holt) just really feels that he is an undercover police officer,” Despain said.
Holt was arrested on two counts of impersonating a police officer, disorderly conduct, and unlawful detention and booked into Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Facility.
