ST. GEORGE — This evening, Performance Diesel Inc. began its fourth annual Dyno Event and Truck Show which will continue through Saturday. Dozens of custom built semitrailers from all over the country lit up the night as St. George residents enjoyed the spectacle. The Pride and Polish section of the competition featured trucks covered in chrome and lights. As dusk fell, drivers started their trucks and began spilling red, yellow, green and blue light into the PDI parking lot, located in the industrial park north of St. George Boulevard.
The company hosts the two-day truck competition as a way of showing appreciation for customers, PDI General Manager Shaun Barney said. The show will continue tomorrow as competitors battle to see whose truck will claim the top prize. Residents are encouraged to come out to the event at 687 North Industrial Road and enjoy the free show; and, free lunch will be provided by PDI, Barney said, as just another way the company shows its gratitude towards customers.
Within the Pride and Polished portion of the competition, trucks are judged based on creativity, looks, and lights, almost like a beauty competition for trucks. The trucks glimmer, inside and out. On the other hand, the horsepower portion of the competition uses PDI’s dynamometer to determine which truck has the most horsepower. Judging will conclude tomorrow.
The Dyno Event and Truck Show attracts some of the nation’s top trucks and serves as a qualifying event for nationals, held in Dallas each August. Barney said this year’s show includes competitors from Connecticut, Wisconsin and California.
The show serves as a way for PDI to showcase product. Present on the lot stood some of PDI’s own national qualifying trucks, glowing neon blue as spectators gathered around taking pictures.
Moe Whitchurch, a two time competitor from northern California, said that the show attracts people with similar passions and creates a social gathering for the close knit trucking community. He said that the PDI competition was bigger than the Las Vegas show and that the St. George event in particular is about bragging rights and presents participants with a way to show off.
The St. George Fire Department was also present at the show to participate in the display of lights. The fire engine flashed brightly in the parking lot and helped light up the spectacle.
