ST. GEORGE – Dixie State University and the CEBA Business of Art program announced the recipients of six artist grants, which will be awarded at the 2013 Business of Art seminar, Nov. 8-9, in Kanab.
The seminar
The annual Business of Art Seminar for visual artists in all disciplines, is presented by Dixie State University and CEBA, in an effort to educate artists and enhance their business skills. This seminar features an exciting schedule of classes and workshops, presented by knowledgeable professionals from throughout Utah.
The funding for the grants, totaling $15,000, was made possible by a generous donation by Zions Bank and its president and CEO A. Scott Anderson. The annual grant program was created to support homegrown artists, small business owners and art educators in Utah, northern Arizona and southern Nevada who attend the annual Business of Art Seminar, which is held each November in Kanab.
The 2013 event will be held at Kanab Middle School, 690 South Cowboy Way, Friday, Nov. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

DSU Vice President of Institutional Advancement Christina Schultz lauded the partnership between Zions Bank, DSU and the Center for Education, Business and the Arts in Kanab. She added that thanks to the generosity of Anderson and Zions Bank, a number of artists, galleries and educators will be given the opportunity to realize dreams and reach goals they may have thought were unattainable.
“Dixie State University’s mission is to provide educational and cultural opportunities, which in turn benefits our community and economy,” Schultz said. “This generous grant donation and Zions Bank’s support of the Business of Art Seminar will help us fulfill those goals.”

Artist Grant awards
Tracy Anderson received the “Student Award,” which provides a $2,000 stipend to an undergraduate or graduate student to be used for tuition, books and fees in pursuit of an art degree. This year’s recipient is DSU student Tracy Anderson of St. George. Anderson is completing her Bachelors degree in Visual Arts.
The Professional Award is $3,000 awarded to a professional artist to be used for the Business of Art program to purchase a work of art from applicants submitting work for consideration. This year’s winner is Cyrus Mejia from Kanab for his piece titled “Dog Chair.”
Business Grant awards
This grant includes a “Gallery Award” of $2,500 presented to an art gallery to develop and implement an art exhibition featuring living regional artists.
This year’s recipient is Arts to Zion – Studio Tour and Virtual Gallery Season in Washington County. This organization has been promoting artists on Facebook for three years, creating a platform to promote the entire arts community and in doing so have created an online art destination in Southern Utah. The grant award will allow them to expand this network to YouTube by providing for the videotaping of the artists working in their studios. Arts to Zion staff members will be also be producing YouTube productions for this year’s Business of Art seminar.
An “Artist Award” of $2,500 is given to an artist for the purpose of preparing and marketing a Kane County Healing Arts Exhibit featuring his/her art in an effort to enhance their business as an artist. This year’s recipient is Skylayr Hibberd, of St. George. His “Platters for Presents” project, which will take place in December, consists of eight large ceramic platters that showcase the colors of Southern Utah. All proceeds of sold platters will go to Kane County Hospital Thrift Store for families that are in need of gifts for Christmas.
Art Education Grant award
The “Pre-Conference Award” is $2,500 and is give to an applicant interested in offering a pre-conference art education project in Kanab to be marketed as a pre-event to the Business of Art Seminar. The award recipients are Craig and Renon Hulet of Salt Lake City, who will present a workshop titled “The Perfect Creative Business.” The presentation uses participative painting at times as allegories to one’s life and business with a goal to help create vision, passion and excellence.
The “Art Education Content Award” of $2,500 to assist an artist in the development and delivery of art education content in the community of their choice is being bestowed to Marilyn Bambrough of Morgan, Utah, who is developing a new art program at Morgan Elementary School titled “The Journey of Imagination.” This program will take place next spring as students in grades 1 through 4 will learn about local Utah artists. Students will produce works in watercolor, terpera, line drawings, clay, paper mache and print. The “Journey” will culminate with an evening for the students to not only present their work to the community, but to meet and see demonstrations from several of the great Utah artists they have studied.
