WASHINGTON COUNTY – A traffic collision Monday evening sent one person to the hospital and temporarily shutdown part of state Route 18.
Around 5:30 p.m., Monday, a Saturn passenger car was traveling northbound on SR-18 at mile post 37 when the car began to drift out of the lane and the driver over-corrected, Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said. The over-correction caused the passenger car to collide with a southbound minivan. The minivan spun out from the impact while the passenger car went off the road and hit an embankment.
A UHP trooper who responded to the scene indicated the driver of the Saturn may have momentarily fallen asleep behind the wheel and began to drift off the road, then over-corrected, causing the collision, Johnson said.
The occupants of the minivan refused medical attention while the driver of the passenger car was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center with minor injuries to a leg.
A portion of SR-18 was temporarily shutdown while emergency responders and road crews dealt with the accident. The roadway was reopen by 7 p.m.
