Dixie State Choral Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra to open 2013-14 concert season

ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State University Choral Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra will open their 2013-14 concert seasons this weekend.

Choral Ensemble

The DSU Choral Ensemble will hold a special performance at the Dolores Dore’ Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall on the DSU campus at 7:30 p.m., Friday.

The concert will feature three of DSU’s choral groups, beginning with the Concert Choir under the direction of Norman Lister, which will perform the Schubert “Mass in G.” In addition, the Women’s Chorus, under the direction of Rachel Cox, will perform selections from Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” and the Chamber Singers, conducted by Dr. Ken Petersen, will perform notable works from Joshua Shank, Daniel Elder, Ola Gjeilo and Steve Zegree.

The Dixie State Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Paul Abegg, will present its annual Fall Concert on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., in the Avenna Center Cox Auditorium on the DSU campus.

Symphony Orchestra

The Dixie State Symphony Orchestra will be joined on stage by guest performer and DSU faculty member Dr. Timothy Francis on trombone, who will play “Ferdinand David Trombone Concerto No. 4” with the orchestra. Also featured on the program are Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture,” Smetana’s “Moldau” and “Dance of the Comedians,” and Stravinsky’s “Danse Infernale,” “Berceuse” and “Finale” from his “Firebird Suite.”

This is the first time our orchestra has featured a trombonist as soloist and it is a unique opportunity to hear a trombone solo with an orchestra,” Abegg said. “We are looking forward to having him join us for this concert.”

The Orchestra will perform twice this semester, including the ensemble’s annual Christmas concert on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Orchestra will also perform a pair of concerts during the 2014 spring semester, beginning with the ensemble’s winter concert on Saturday, Feb. 22, and will close the season with its spring concert on Saturday, April 19. The Orchestra will also perform during Dixie State’s Centennial Commencement Ceremonies slated for Friday, May 2, 2014.

DSU Performance and Fine Arts Season Pass

For the sixth-straight season, Dixie State is offering a DSU Performance and Fine Arts Season Pass (excluding dance performances and concerts) for just $78, which is more than a 40 percent savings over regular single-event ticket prices, giving patrons access to all DSU theatre productions, and instrumental and vocal concerts for the 2013-14 season. In addition, there are several free recitals on this year’s schedule to complement an already strong performance season.
