Youth poetry contest and celebration, entry deadline Saturday

ST. GEORGE – On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Utah State Poetry Society will hold their fourth annual Youth Poetry Contest awards ceremony.

The contest is open to all public, private, and home-schooled students living in the Washington County School District. Students who would like to enter the contest are asked to submit one poem of up to 24 lines before Oct. 12 to [email protected].

The theme for this year’s contest is “peace” and both rhymed and free-verse poetry is welcomed. Prizes and  gift certificates will be awarded to contest winners, who will be invited to read their poems at a 10 a.m. conference at the Lexington Hotel on October 19.

Submissions should include the student’s name, phone number, grade level and age, and the name of the school (please indicate if the student is home schooled).

Students will be judged according to the following grade groups:

  • 1st – 2nd grade
  • 3rd – 5th grade
  • 6th – 8th grade
  • 9th – 10th grade
  • 11th – 12th grade

All entries will be judged by UTSPS members on originality, theme, and technique. Please contact Lin Floyd with any questions at [email protected].
