Lee: Shutdown bullying, best argument against Obamacare

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Sen. Mike Lee responded to the president’s bullying of the American people and said it exposed all the reasons why Congress must fight against the massive expansion of government in to Americans’ health care choices:

The Obama Administration’s behavior during the first week of the shutdown has been the best argument against Obamacare anyone has ever made.

The American people do not want Obamacare, and they are demanding that Washington act to protect them from the harmful effects of this unfortunate law. The president’s response has been to ignore them, allow the government to shutdown, and then use his power to close national parks and monuments, stop paying veterans’ benefits, and cut off cancer research.

This is exactly why we should not expand the government’s power over our health care choices. What power the government has, it will use – and misuse – to advance its own interests, even if that means punishing the American people along the way.

The message behind the Administration’s shutdown bullying is the same message sent by his IRS’s abuses of political opponents: do what I say, or else. This is the abusive, partisan, unaccountable bureaucracy that, under Obamacare, will soon be running America’s health care system.

President Obama is not just using the vast powers of his office as leverage against Republicans – he is abusing his powers as leverage against the American people.

The scenes of World War II veterans being shut out of a monument built in their honor should be a bright red flag warning the American people what an out-of-control federal government is capable of. Each day brings a new and more vivid example of why it is critical that we not allow Washington to reach even further into our most personal and intimate decisions.

We now see how determined the president is to expand the power of the federal government and his willingness to use that power to harm the country to get what he wants. Congress cannot allow this to stand and should continue to work to end the shut down and protect the American people from Obamacare.

Are you kidding me? Mike Lee, you are a joke. Congress Shut down the Government. Congress needs to take responsibility and STOP holding the American people hostage to get what you want. You want Obamacare gone, use the proper channels to have the law repealed. Congress is the ONLY reason the Government has shut down.

  • informed October 7, 2013 at 7:05 pm

Your intelligence is showing Giuseppe, you need to get facts and not just drink the koolaid that the media shoves down our throat, Mike Lee is exactly right this has now been a power play by the president, he is the reason there is a shutdown. And he is making people pay for going against him. Scary to have someone weild that type of abusive power.

    • tom October 7, 2013 at 11:06 pm

Oh! Wait! Is that you Mikey? Talking to yourself and those “American people” voices in your head again. It’s good that you can listen to yourself like that, because everyone else is beginning to tune you out.

    • Giuseppe October 8, 2013 at 6:46 am

You didn’t list any facts in your statement so it holds zero water (to make coolaid with). Here are some facts Mr. Infored, so you can be better informed: Speaker Boehner can put an end to this shut down by calling for a vote on a clean CR. There are more than 217 (needed) votes to get it to pass. Obama has nothing to do with the current shutdown. Obamacare is Law, it has been challenged more than 45 times and it still stands. It has been dragged in front of the Supreme Court and found to be Constitutional. The POTUS doesn’t need to make concessions on a law that has been challenged and the challenges have failed. Obama’s platform in 2012 was a large part to do with Obamacare, and he was overwhelmingly re-elected by the people. The “People” must want it. The GOP is holding the economy hostage by shutting down government spending unless the Democrats negotiate on a law that has been passed, challenged and found to be constitutional. That’s not how our government is meant to work instead it is suppose to be checks and balances with the majority rule. So be true to the American way, put it to a vote.

Seriously? Another politician’s press release presented as a news story? Shame on you St. George News.

      Oh dear, Julie, shame?
Press releases are a staple of news; thus, their name – a release to the press.
We do realize they will have bias, and so you will often see we identify the source at the close of the report and leave it to our readers to weigh the message accordingly.
I hope that clarifies, thanks Julie.

Joyce, I took another look. On the web version, It is little clearer that it’s a press release.
In the mobile version, you don’t see the graphic that says “From the Office of …”

  • Aric Cramer October 7, 2013 at 7:43 pm

You come up with the “idea” to shut down the government because you don’t like a law that has passed both houses and the Republican controlled Supreme Court and then blame the President for the shutdown? Can you say Hypocrite?

    • Logic October 7, 2013 at 10:45 pm

Wow, I am not a big fan of Aric Cramer but he is dead on. You say it is unconstitutional but it has been challenged at every level and deemed constitutional. So the only way to stop it is to force a government shut down and try to strongarm the Democrats into “postponing” the law taking effect. Just so next year you can find another BS reason next year to “postpone” it again. Now who is the tyrant?

    • Just Perusing October 8, 2013 at 8:19 am

Being respectful, didn’t Obamacare pass both houses because of a so-called “loophole” that the Whitehouse employed? I recall that it didn’t pass into law by the usual consensus. It really seems to me that this law has been pushed on a nation that the majority didn’t want. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

      • philiplo October 8, 2013 at 11:36 am

The only “loophole” employed was to shut down a filibuster so a vote could be taken. Aren’t those who attack the ACA the loudest also those who are always looking for “an up or down vote?” Should we not have such a vote?
        .
        It passed.

  • NO_SIX October 7, 2013 at 8:41 pm

The Govt shut down because the Republicans decided to pick a fight they were sure to lose in the face of a Democrat Senate and Democrat President. Those who start fights get kudos when they win and boos when they lose.

While the Republicans caused the shutdown the Democrats malicious and vindictive response to the shutdown and refusal to permit selective funding provisions to be enacted is and absolute disgrace.

A pox on both their houses.

  • Ron October 7, 2013 at 9:20 pm

If there is “bullying,” it’s coming from the Far Right. You don’t see the Left forcing a government shutdown in order to enact gun control . . . or anything else. Get the government back to work and then debate Obamacare as a separate issue. If it’s as bad as you say it is, Senator Lee, it will fail. (Or is it that you’re afraid it will work?)

  • Fred October 7, 2013 at 9:33 pm

  • Metzen October 7, 2013 at 10:21 pm

If the shutdown was about money president pinnochio had a hundred things he could have shut down that would have been painless to the American people. Instead he intentionally chose the most painful and visible things to close, in the most unpresidential, un-American way possible. Which is exactly what he did with the sequester. There is nothing genuine or American about this presidents attitude or behavior at all. Stop listening to what he says, and his slogans, and watch only what he does, his actions. It’s very instructive.

The American people are just puny pawns on his chess board. And his motives are far more than just slimy politics. He will gladly see America reduced to a 3rd world country, entirely submissive to global governance, and without a shred of the Constitution or Bill of Rights remaining. Unfortunately most Americans will realize this far, far too late. If ever.

    • Bender October 7, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Common sense isn’t going to work here, because they will blindly follow their leader, they trust him, what can i say, we trusted Bush.. I insert we just go on and “Love one Another” as we were asked to do 2000 years ago.. and let them see if we are right.. This is Gods plan unfolding.. We must understand that we “right wingers” believe just as fantastically in our endeavors as they do.. It does seem there is aweful socialism trying to replace large portions of our constitution.. this is the change Obama is talking about.. there are alot of “Liberals” in our Nation.. that want socialism/communisim/less capitalism/dictatorshipism… we must stand back, take a deep breath and consider what next.. attacking our demacratic neighbors is not the answer.. besides.. they are trolling on here. they are NOT the majority is southern utah, yet there is a huge commenting section of them on here.. they are working in “pools” it seems, every where.

Should someone tell Mr. Lee that this is a law he’s attempting to fight? Hopefully during the next election the voters will find better candidates to vote for. Websites crashed the first day of enrollment for the Affordable Health Care Act due to the millions of Americans who wanted – needed – access to healthcare. That certain lawmakers are able to ignore that their constituents desperately need healthcare shows their ignorance and will hopefully lead to their being replaced by candidates who care about more than posturing over a law that was passed by the house, the senate, the supreme court and survived over 40 attempts to overturn it.
Mr Lee should be ashamed of himself as he continues to draw his (much deserved, according to him) paycheck and enjoy the excellent healthcare that’s afforded to lawmakers.

To Karen, you’re playing the left right blame game again.
I’ll say it again. Y’all should go read all the other truth members comments on the STGnews Shutdown articles. The supposed govt shutdown is a hyped up show by the men behind the govt. It’s political theater to make it look like they are pinching pennies and doing somethng about it. It’s clearly illegitimate when they cut things like parks, memorials, and monuments. Those things cost a fraction of everythng else they spend, like wars and $2 billion domestic spying center. It takes more monetary resources to shut down a memorial with guards, barricades and arrests, than it does to just leave it open. It’s obviously right out of propagandists playbook. Is the alarm clock telling anyone else to wake up yet? To Informed, Fred, and Metzger, you’re on target.

To Logic, why should the people be bound to a law that was so difficult to pass? The Supreme Court are supposed to be constitutional experts, and so why couldn’t only 9 experts agree on it, unless it wasn’t constitutional? It was a split decision with a flip flopper at the end who came out of the room with bloodshot eyes and was disoriented. Does this sound like a law the American people should follow? We dont have to follow an unconstitutional law. Instead of knowing it went through it’s process of being passed, and signed into law, how about you learn why it’s unconstitutional and find out what exactly is in this traitorous treasonous 10000+ page bill and what could happen bcus of it. The govt cant force you to purchase a private product. Its not good. This Is no longer America. It’s tyrants ruling over a zombie population.

    • Giuseppe October 8, 2013 at 7:54 am

It is constitutional because the Supreme Court has said so, regardless of the #’s, it is majority rule. If they thought for a second that it was more unconstitutional then they would have repealed it. And furthermore the Government does require you to purchase car insurance from a private source or face being fined. So YES the Government can FORCE you to purchase a private product. And I have been driving in excess of 40 years and NEVER had an accident, therefore I can say car insurance is not good (for me) but it is good for so many others. Obamacare is no different, it might not be good for you, but it will be good for so many more.

      • DoubleTap October 8, 2013 at 10:10 am

        Giuseppe:

You are correct in saying that the government mandates you have car insurance. BUT, the government DOES NOT mandate you buy a car. So how can you be mandated to buy car insurance if you don’t own a car? And if the ACA is now law, as you claim, why is it that the president is allowed to break the “law” by all the exemptions he has granted? He does NOT have the authority to change a “law” that you claim it is. He is NOT part of the legislative branch that writes laws. So your poor excuse for a president, Obama has committed a crime by breaking a law. And if this ACA is so great, why is it that Obama and his family, the entire Congress and their staffs, and Obama’s business cronies are all exempt from it and the American people are not? Why are they considered better than the rest of us Americans? Your brilliance really shows Giuseppe…maybe you should stick to building long-nosed lying puppets.

        • philiplo October 8, 2013 at 11:32 am

          1. Congressional members, their families and their staffs are not exempt from the ACA. The ACA was designed to provide coverage for the more than 30 million Americans with no access to insurance. It is NOT designed to replace existing coverage (usually provided by an employer). If someone is not covered by insurance next year, they will face a (small) fine. No exemptions for congress.

If you’re interested, you can read more here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2013/09/27/is-congress-exempt-from-obamacare/2883635/

          2. No, you’re not “forced” to buy a car. But health insurance covers bodies, not cars. And bodies get sick and break down unexpectedly. These breakdowns, when not covered by health insurance, frequently bankrupt individuals, families and businesses. Additionally, when the bodies break down or are injured and the owner of the body does not have insurance, the rest of us (you, me, your parents, etc.) end up paying for the repairs. Hey, if you’re ready to give up your body, I’m sure you won’t be “forced” to purchase insurance.

          3. Speaking of brilliance, perhaps the glare from that mirror is blinding you a bit.

        • Giuseppe October 8, 2013 at 1:54 pm

Truthseeker:”The govt cant force you to purchase a private product.”
Giuseppe: “The Government does require you to purchase car insurance from a private source.”

Please do not try and argue a point by adding context to a conversation. Just because there is an option of not owning a car doesn’t exempt the need to purchase insurance. The rest of your rant is simply incorrect, please educate yourself more before posting a rant or at lease list credible sources for your argument. Thank you Philiplo for the INFORMATIVE links to the true and accurate facts regarding government staff and families being exempt.

  • Roger Robinson October 8, 2013 at 9:24 am

IMO the law is the law. the rule of the majority votes makes that case no matter if It is Just One vote! If the law needs to be repealed or amended then there are the ways to do so. But It takes a Majority to make this happen by our Constitution. If a stop sign is placed on street, is it not understood that Every One should obey it and stop or ignore it because one doesn’t feel that it is justified?

  • philiplo October 8, 2013 at 9:54 am

The Affordable Care Act allowed over 3 million people to remain on their parent’s health insurance plan up to age 26.

The Affordable Care Act allows millions of people with pre-existing conditions to finally obtain health insurance. Those with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, etc., who were either denied coverage altogether or were offered prohibitively expensive policies, can no longer be turned away.

The Affordable Care Act allows about 30 million previously uninsured people to obtain affordable health insurance coverage.

Those opposing “Obamacare” because they fear “big government” are willing to sacrifice these millions of people to their selfish ideology. It’s unfortunate that their humanity does not extend nearly so far as their hatred and fear.

  • DoubleTap October 8, 2013 at 10:17 am

The Affordable Care Act IS NOT about healthcare….IT IS about the control of the people. What will all you Obama supporters say when he next, by Executive Order decides that there will forever be no more elections and he will be president forever? How will you like that? Then he will impose all sorts of unconstitutional policies that you will not like. Then it will be too late for you to do anything about it. You should all think about the freedom you will be giving up…merely to serve this poor excuse of a president.

    • philiplo October 8, 2013 at 11:41 am

You seriously believe what you’ve written? And you believe what you say will be the next step?
      .
The ACA was not enacted through Executive Order. It passed both houses of congress and was signed by the president.
      .
Ultimately, constitutionality is decided by the Supreme Court. The ACA was challenged, and was deemed constitutional. You don’t get to change that decision (or ignore it) because you don’t like the president.

      • Giuseppe October 8, 2013 at 2:01 pm

I am a moderate. If these antics are now going to be permitted by the minority in congress every time we pay the bills, our country would become ungovernable for any president Blue, Red or other. The Tea Party wants to do away with or change Obamacare, which may not be a bad idea, but you don’t threaten the pattern of governance we have over it.

Mike Lee is an embarrassment to Utah, his father’s name, and his religion. He hitched himself to the wrong wagon (Ted Cruz) to gain quick access and power. He would say that he is doing the job his constituency has sent him to do. No, he is doing the job SOME of his constituency has elected him to do. He is in fact ignoring the sensible majority that elected him.

Anarchists make headlines and are good for ratings and pot stirring. Sensible people make boring, consistent arguments and are largely unaccounted for because it is maddening to try to explain the what should be obvious to irrational people. The Republicans took the car out for a joy ride, crashed it, and left the President to help them get out of their own mess. Kudos to President Obama for standing his ground. People, Obamacare can be fixed through normal legislative processes and executive influence. Win an election, a few seats in each house, and come to the table like an adult.

    — Now cue the Tea Party guy who quotes, “speaking truth to power,” or about “speaking truth as a revolutionary act” as I roll my eyes —

  • truthseeker October 8, 2013 at 2:31 pm

To Giuseppe. You buy car insurance when you have a car and operate it on the roads. And that is State regulated, not federal. The federal govt cant ‘FORCE’ anythng on its people and if you believe it can, then maybe you should know the difference between the original founding of this country and the likes of Nazi Germany, Stalinist Soviet Union, Maoist China, Kim’s North Korea. Forcing anythng should raise some red flags, but sadly people are so lost that they don’t know their own liberties and think the govt can take liberties away with the stroke of a pen. Stroke this. Dang bud, when you think its okay for somethng to be rammed down our throats and say its constitutional, makes me realize that we definitely are in trouble, as a portion of the population doesn’t know much about the history of their own country and what the constitution and bill of rights means. Nor do they understand the implications of a 10000+ page bill that is NOT just healthcare. It will gut one more industry in this designed economic collapse, and it will stifle the economy, further taxing the people, eliminating the middle class which has been going on for 6 years, it will put doctors out of business in rural.areas to further get.people into the mega cities which as has been happening for fifty years. It will limit the amount and quality of care people.will receive, essentially creating medical.tyranny, it will include death panels, it will introduce device a national ID card and implantable RFID chips. They already have the tv commercial for it, which that is a slippery slope topic bcus first its medical info, then its bank account info, then the govt will have even more control over our lives. It will be another nail in the coffin of freedom. This is not a secret and its easy to see. You can already see it in some schools and their external tracking devices and info that’s recorded on kids. The kids are being conditioned to think the new political agenda is cool. It’s uncool, that’s why they need to target the kids that have no idea of the implications or of history. They’re being used to sell the ideas for the next decade or so. It’s called indoctrination, not education.
To Phiilipo, its not affordable. It has been said and has happened the past couple years, that the rates went up 50% in the first year and will double in three years. It was sold as free and low cost healthcare on the Obama care website and before October 1st it was edited to say low cost only. It was sneaked through by with lies and telling people anythng they wanted to hear to support it. Open you eyes. Obamacare and Romney care are the same. Doesn’t that tell you anythng?- that it’s not some piece of unique life saving amazing legislation, its an old recycled rip off piece of legislation. It was written by the insurance companies long ago, so of course the rates will go up. And of course its a large chunk out of our pockets. What do you say about the fines?- file taxes and get a few thousand dollar fine for not having obamacare, or worse have money garnished from.your bank account automatically, or have a tax lien taken out on a home. I’m not saying this will happen, but the possibility if it happening is enough of a warning for me. It’s called being informed. Americans with a spine will revolt when this stuff starts to happen and we will see how ‘wonderful’ this is. If you people think its so great, you are in ‘wonderland’. There’s people like me that have tried to be a resource for people freeing their mind. I feel sorry for all of the zombies incapable of critical thinking that will believe anythng the news media tells them, anythng their puppet presidents tell them, as if authority cares about them and wants you to be healthy and safe.ha It’s mass madness. It only frustrates me bcus its the sheeple in slumber that are going to hold back the informed and awake people.
To Phiilipo again, Double Tap wasn’t saying Obamacare was done using an executive order, but was probably saying that since this president has used so much executive orders and presidential directives, that the congress and wupre court don’t matter and he can do what he wants. And that includes being the last American president. Enter dictator. It’s easy to see that Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr,, and Barry Sotorro, have all abused their power and usurped co.trees and have dismantled the constitution and bill of rights. Increasingly so the past two presidents. I don’t blame the presidents bcus they are only puppets and are doing tbe work for someone else much larger, for somethng else much larger. It’s a big idea according to Bush Sr. Roosevelt even said that presidents are selected, not elected. It’s rigged and how people can keep playing this political game is beyond me.
To Think Outside the Box. You are on target there’s much more you could post though. It’s the same with the City of London that is a separate territory within London. The District of Columbia is not part of the country, that’s why it says on labels, ‘ the fifty states and the Distric of Columbia’ bcus its separate. I wish more people knew that. D.C. is ran by ruthless international criminals. These dead AmeriKan crony capitalist fascist socialist communist authoritarian dictator loving statists that think they are good citizens, need to do some research on the govt we have in power. And research the difference between an American and an American citizen. Citizens are owned by the govt. Govt farm and citizen farm animal. Its shocking to say the least.

PS: If that is what Double Tap was saying, ’twas poorly researched and shoddily writ.

Typo, Supreme court not wupre court. And usurped congress not co.trees.

Double Tap is on target by saying there will be stuff coming out of.this bill that many people will not like. It’s tragic.
To Elliiemae 100, you said it yourself. It took “40” tries to “OVERTURN” it. Does that sound a clear cut piece of legislation that people should be forced to follow? I fear for our future.

This is stuff civil wars stem from. Speaking of the possible coming civil war. Or civil unrest, who was president last time their was a civil war? What are the similarities and comparisons made? Who was a president one.hundred years after that? What happened to him? What are the similarities and comparisons? What else was going on in that era that has been revisited recently?- what is the similarities to another fallen figure?.. What has been the trend of staged events as of late? What will ignite a will uproar of welfare state supporters? … Please just understand that what will happen in the near future, may be staged or set up and be real, or be a staged attempt on his life. And blamed on political oppositionion and dissenters.

To Roger Robinson, you’re comparing apple’s to oranges. And also saying we should obey somethng bcus its there is a very dangerous mentality….
I may be called extreme or radical with what I say. But I hope people realize that the people in Nazi Germany, Stalinist Soviet Union, Maos China, Kim’s NoKorea would’ve been so fortunate to have extreme language and radical disobedience. Someone has to sacrifice their image and safety so that others can see the example set for them. Revolutionaire is who that is.

Senator Lee, we know who the bullies are so save your bluster for Sen. Cruz and others of your ilk.

If Obamacare is so good for the country, why did no one get to see the whole thing before it was signed into law? Why did they change the word ‘fine” to “tax” during the Supreme Court hearing and change it back to “fine” after? Philiplo, you are the kind of person that the government loves….a person easily manipulated.

Okay, give it a go. Manipulate me.

Seriously, though, the lack of any factual basis or references for what people commenting on this site say makes it difficult sometimes to rebut their erroneous statements. How does one post a coherent response to a rambling mass of conspiracy theories like truthseeker’s comment from 2:31 PM today? RFID chips, death panels, doctors out of business, etc., etc., etc. As my friend’s teenage daughter might write, OMFG! Sometimes the loon factor just gets to be too much. And now you, lp, join the party. What a day.

    Philipio,

You are good at using Alinsky Tatics calling people “loons” . It doesn’t work anymore. Just like Barrry is the ILLEGAL PRESIDENT everything he signed is ILLEGAL.

    • philiplo October 9, 2013 at 8:50 am

Fred, if the loon shoe fits….

“The message behind the Administration’s shutdown bullying is the same message sent by his IRS’s abuses of political opponents: do what I say, or else.”

Sen. Lee, history is coming for you and believe me — it’s not going to be kind.
