Red Storm hopes to continue inspired play against SFU

GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE
Simon Fraser (2-1) at Dixie State (1-3, 1-2), tonight, 6 p.m., Hansen Stadium
Previous Meeting: Clan 58, Red Storm 47
Broadcast: CEC-TV; ESPN SportsRadio 106.1 FM

RED STORM
dsulogoHead coach: Scott Brumfeld (4th year, 7-29 overall)
Offense: Pistol, Pro Set
Defense: Pro 4-3
Last Game: Won at Humboldt State, 49-24
Players to watch: Quarterback Griff Robles is coming off arguably the best game of his career, accounting for 401 yards of total offense and six touchdowns (three passing and three rushing). The history of this match-up has typically been offensive shootouts. However, SFU is coming off a loss to Western Oregon last week, partly due to the loss of its starting quarterback. That severely limited SFU’s passing game and they were unable to score a touchdown. Look for Jake Duncan and Nick Largent to have big games shutting down SFU’s rushers. The offense could have another big outing if it continues its inspired play from last week. Robles, Joe Don Duncan, Mitch Frei and Joel Davis could all have big outings.

THE CLAN
header_logoHead Coach: Dave Johnson (8th year, 26-42)
Offense: Multiple
Defense: Multiple
Last Game: Lost to Western Oregon, 30-9
Players to watch: Quarterback Ryan Stanford has been playing well but had to leave the game last week due to injury. Last year’s starter, Ryan Blum, replaced him but was unable to rally the Clan against the Wolves. It is unknown which quarterback will line up against Dixie, but if Stanford does not return 100% healthy, that bodes well for the Dixie defense. SFU’s rushing attack is averaging less that three yards per carry. Wide receiver Bobby Pospischil not only leads the team in receptions, but has also connected three times for touchdowns on double-pass plays. Dixie’s Daniel Moffett and the Red Storm secondary will have to be ready for that threat.

GAME OUTLOOK
Dixie got its first win of the season last week. SFU took its first loss. The loss of SFU’s starting quarterback hurts them, but Blum now has a week of practice with the starting O and started for SFU last year. Dixie has momentum though, and if the Red Storm can play error-free, they will get their first home win of the season tonight.
