Red Storm Recap: DSU spikers undefeated in Pac West play

ST. GEORGE – This week in Dixie State sports saw the football team capture its first win, the volleyball team continue undefeated in conference play with a win against nationally-ranked Fresno Pacific and the women’s soccer team net two wins to put them among the Great West Conference leaders. The following is a recap of the Red Storm action this past week:

FOOTBALL
dixiestateThe Red Storm broke their eight-game losing streak with an impressive win over preseason conference favorite Humboldt State, 49-24 on the Lumberjacks’ own turf. Quarterback Griff Robles accounted for six touchdowns, three each passing and rushing. The defense and special teams stepped up and delivered, causing Humboldt State to turn over the ball six times (four interceptions, two fumbles). Defensive back Daniel Moffett garnered GNAC defensive player of the week with three interceptions. The win moved DSU’s record to 1-3 (1-2). The team returns home to face conference leader Simon Fraser. The Clan lost their first game this past week to fall to 2-1 on the season.

VOLLEYBALL
Dixie State’s volleyball team finished the past week with consecutive wins, moving its record to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the Pac West Conference. The Red Storm’s first match against the #15-ranked Fresno Pacific Sunbirds on Saturday went five games, 19-25, 25-19, 25-16, 24-26, 15-11.

Leading the way offensively with 18 kills was Shannon Young. Maddie Rex and Kendahl Weiland also added 12 kills apiece. Defensively, Makenzi Bird and Weiland had nine and six blocks respectively.
Two nights later the Red Storm needed five games to defeat Dominican, 25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-6. It was a rematch from their earlier meeting that also required five games from the Red Storm in the victory. Rex and Weiland had 21 and 17 kills respectively. Shelby Sorenson led in assists with 58. Alex Anderson led defensively with 40 digs.

“It was almost a carbon copy of our match just one week ago at Dominican,” said coach Robyn Felder. “We were awful for two games, good in two, and stellar in the final.” The Red Storm stays unbeated in Pacific West play and is off to their best start since 2009. The will host Azusa Pacific at 12:00 noon at home this week.

MEN’S SOCCER
The men’s soccer team began its homestand this past week and came away with a 1-1 mark for the week. The team stands at 2-4-2 (1-3-1) on the season. On Saturday DSU hosted Hawaii Pacific. Erik Shallenberger scored his third goal in two games but the team fell 4-1. On Monday the Red Storm rebounded and scored a dominant 5-0 shutout over Chaminade. Scoring for the Red Storm were Shallenberger, Sean Jenne, Wade Canon, Bobby Schwarzkopf and Justin Brinkerhoff. Keeper Tyler Walters earned his first shutout of the year with two saves.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Dixie State women’s soccer team won two games this past week, then took a draw Thursday night, to push its record to 4-3-2 (3-1-1). Last Thursday the squad opened against Hawaii Pacific in St. George. The Red Storm outshot the Sea Warriors 17-11 with a goal each from Kimberly Thurman and Ashley Wade, both coming in the second half.

The second game, Monday against Chaminade, was much closer. The Red Storm needed overtime to pull off a 4-3 victory over the winless visitors. Despite outshooting Chaminade 37-7, the Silverswords made the most of their shots, scoring on three, two in the final four minutes of regulation to erase a 3-1 deficit. The deciding goal in overtime was scored my Megan Marchbanks with an assist from Jennifer Mason. The goal was Marchbanks’ second. DSU also got goals from Mason and Kimberly Thurman.

Thursday night, Dixie State’s women’s soccer team received goals from junior Kimberly Thurman and sophomore Kaisa Goodman, but had to settle for a 2-2 Pacific West Conference draw with BYU-Hawaii after allowing two late second-half goals. DSU (4-3-2/4-1-1 PacWest) built a two-goal lead midway through the second period. Goals in the 79th and 85th minutes respectively from the Seasiders (1-4-2/0-3-1) wrapped up the Storm’s second home draw of the year.

“It’s our second game in a row that we lost our lead in the last 10 minutes,” head coach Kacey Bingham said. “Once we figure out how to close a match, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t find success the rest of the season.”
